    • PURPOSE:To keep a constant read signal level by controlling the target value of the laser output based on the maximum value of the light received from a subject surface. CONSTITUTION:The electric output signal of a photodetector is detected and amplified by a photodetecting circuit 91. Then the peak waveform of the electric output signal is detected by a peak holding circuit 92. The difference between the peak waveform signal and the target value Vo is amplified by a differential amplifier circuit 93. The value Vo is previously set at a level equal to a signal level which is most suited to execution of process without causing a saturation phenomenon of the element 7 and a process circuit. The signal amplified by the circuit 93 is inputted to the control terminal of a laser driving circuit 94. Thus it is possible to always process the signal of a proper level and therefore to quickly and surely identify the contents of bar codes at all times.

    • PURPOSE:To select a suitable binarization condition and to stably obtain a satisfactory image by selecting the output of an A/D converting circuit to have a relatively high slice level when the level of the image is high and selecting the output of an A/D converting circuit to have a relatively low slice level when it is low. CONSTITUTION:The titled device is provided with a picture signal extracting circuit 1 to extract only picture signal component from an image sensor output, a comparing circuit 2 to compare the picture signal with a prescribed slice level A, a delay circuit 3 to delay the picture signal, plural A-D converting circuits 41-4N to convert the picture signal after being delayed to a binarization or a condition over it with a different slice level B and a selecting circuit 5 to select the output of the A-D converting circuit. The level of the image is decided by the comparing circuit 2, when the level of the image is high, the output of the A-D converting circuit to have the relatively high slice level B is selected and when the level of the image is low, the output of the A-D converting circuit to have the relatively low slice level B is selected. Thus, the appropriate selection of binarization condition can be attained regardless of printing condition.

    • PURPOSE:To detect the moving speed of a scanner and, to output a warning if the scanner speed exceeds a prescribed value, by providing a horizontal counter, a vertical counter, plural comparing circuits, an address memory, an arithmetic circuit, a warning circuit, etc. CONSTITUTION:The output of an image sensor 1 stored in an image memory 2 is read out by a horizontal counter 4 at each time of update to take a histogram of black picture elements in the horizontal direction. A comparing circuit A5 compares the value of a counter 4 with a prescribed value K; and if it exceeds the value K, the value of a vertical counter 6 is counted up and is outputted to a comparing circuit B7. The circuit B7 compares the value of the counter 6 with a prescribed value L; and if it exceeds the value L, existence of an image in a continuous area is decided and area information is stored in an address memory A8. An arithmetic circuit 10 obtains the difference of position between contents of the memory A8 and an address memory B9 when comparing them with each other to confirm the same image; and if this difference exceeds a prescribed value, a warning circuit 11 is started to give a warning and a user is instructed to take in data again.

    • PURPOSE:To attain sufficiently required character/bar code reading by using an image sensor comprising a bar code image forming section having a high picture element density and a character image forming section with a low picture element density. CONSTITUTION:The image sensor 4 consists of a bar code image forming section 41 having a high picture element density and a character image forming section 42 having a low picture element density, and a binary signal obtained from the bar code image forming section 41 through a binarization circuit 52 is sent to a bar code identification circuit 7, and a binary signal obtained from the character image forming section 42 through a binarization circuit 51 is sent to a character recognition circuit 6 respectively. Since either a bar code or a character is formed actually on the image sensor, the result of the recognition of each recognition circuit is fed to a selection circuit 8 and which is better is selected. Since the height of the entire image sensor is smaller than the image- formed bar code, the bar code is formed on the bar code identification section. Thus, the required and sufficient character and bar code reading are realized.
