    • A multistage ATM switch, method and system with switch elements with two input/outputs switchable to two other input/outputs. The switch elements are arranged connected to define a matrix with an input stage an output stage and at least one an intermediate stage. The multi stage switch inputs are presented with address information for data, the address information indicates requests for one of several outputs of said the multi stage switch. The requests are broadcast into the multi stage switch. At each stage the requests are remembered, merged and propagated to connected switching elements of a next stage. At each output of the multi stage switch grants a request if traffic can be accepted and propagates the requested grant to connected switching elements. At each switching element, upon receiving a request grant, the request grant is propagated to an input that requested the granted output port. If both inputs requested the granted port the switch element randomly chooses one of the two inputs and propagates the grant on the randomly chosen input. Upon receiving a request grant at an input of the multi stage switch, data is transmitted on a next time slot.

    • A connector includes a modular housing having a jack slidably disposed thereto. The housing includes a substantially U-shaped frame having a cover mounted thereon. A printed circuit board (PCB) is secured to the frame and has an elongated center finger extending between the opposing side walls of the frame. A plurality of partially exposed contact lines are formed on the center finger of the PCB. The jack includes a slide plate having an aperture extending therethrough and a channel communicating with the aperture. The aperture is configured to receive a media plug. Mounted on the slide plate so as to be positioned over the channel is a pin block. The pin block has a plurality of elongated slots formed therein. The slots face the channel and are separated by insulating walls. Disposed within each of the elongated slots is a substantially S-shaped pin. Each pin has a tail end that is mounted to the pin block, a downwardly curved portion that extends within the channel, and an opposing lead end which is freely disposed within the aperture of the slide plate. The center finger of the PCB is slidably received within the channel of the slide plate such that the jack can be selectively moved between an extended position and a retracted position.

    • A conductive panel adapted to align and retain a printed circuit board modular device carrier assembly. The assembly includes a printed circuit board and a plurality of modular electronic device carriers, each sized to slidably receive a modular electronic device such as a Gigabit Interface Converter. The panel includes at least two generally rectangular openings oriented in a row of opening. The openings are sized to permit the modular electronic device to be slidably disposed therethrough. At least one inwardly extending conductive finger is provided integral with the panel and generally orthogonal to the inner panel surface adjacent the bottom edge of the opening and at least one inwardly extending finger is provided integral with the panel generally orthogonal to the inner panel surface adjacent the upper edge of the opening. The upper and lower fingers securely retain the printed circuit board carrier assembly therebetween when the carrier assembly and panel are in assembled relation. Conductive ground contacts are selectively positioned on one side of the printed circuit board. The lower fingers abut the contacts so as to electrically couple the conductive panel to ground through the ground contacts.

    • Method for improved configuration of a link between an end station and an intermediate device in a network. The intermediate device communicates through the link using a point-to-point protocol, and a lower layer protocol and is capable of translating between the lower layer protocol used by the link and a lower layer protocol used by a portion of the network. The intermediate device detects the lower layer protocol used by the end station and configures the link to use the point-to-point protocol, the lower layer protocol used by the end station, and an asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) protocol. A method including signaling the end station to use on the link a lower layer protocol having a particular relationship with the lower layer protocol used by the portion of the network. The particular relationship, according to an aspect of the invention, is that the protocol that the end station is signaled to use is the same as the protocol used by the portion of the network thereby creating efficiencies in transmission from the end station through the intermediate device onto the network.

Advantageously, to facilitate and simplify its configuration, the LAN modem automatically adapts itself to a current network environment of a workstation connected thereto, via the LAN, and then communicates with that workstation through a browser executing thereat to obtain configuration information from a user situated at the workstation. Additionally, the LAN modem, through use of a multi-tiered routing hierarchy including both destination- and source-based routing, accommodates several modalities of network communication not heretofore possible in a conventional router. Specifically, several different workstations can simultaneously communicate through the LAN modem with a common remote network (60) and share a single user account at a corresponding network service provider.

    • A sliding door mechanism for a portable communication or data processing device is adapted for placement of the device on a docking port. The portable device has a component that is covered by the sliding door when the door is in a closed position. A single wire spring coupled with the door and the device has a spring force tending to keep the door closed. The door opens in response to placement of the device on the docking port rail. Upon placement of the device on the docking port rail, the docking port rail slides into guides on a door receptacle located on the housing of the device. The rails of the door in the closed position are slidably disposed in the door receptacle guides. The weight of the device causes the door receptacle guides to cover the docking port rail. As the door receptacle guides slide onto the docking port rail, the door rail is moved upwards into the device, the spring is compressed and the door opens. When the door is in the open position, the docking port connector is in contact with a device component so that the device can communicate through the docking port to other data processing and communication devices. Also, because of the weight of the device supported by the docking port, and the spring force, the device connection to the docking port has very little wobble.
