    • A metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodetector, specifically a new, improved low noise device is disclosed. The disclosed device is a MSM photodiode in which the cathode and anode are made of different materials with optimal Schottky barrier heights. One of these materials is chosen to provide a high ratio of Schottky barrier height to hole transport and the other to provide a high ratio of Schottky barrier height to electron transport. The disclosed MSM photodetector is designed to allow each Schottky barrier to be individually optimized to the point that a wide bandgap Schottky barrier enhancement layer and its associated heterointerface may become unnecessary. Elimination of the charge buildup at the heterointerface enhances carrier extraction resulting in photodetectors with elevated quantum efficiency and enhanced bandwidths.

    • A water-resistant polyphenolic protein adhesive has been obtained from the Atlantic ribbed mussel, Geukensia (Modiolus) demissa. This protein provides a natural model for synthetic or bioengineered adhesives and is characterized by a Gly-Tyr-Lys or, more frequently, Gly-Dop-Lys "tail" fragment of a repeating octapeptide or nonapeptide unit.     • In an ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer, ion cyclotron resonance signals at higher harmonics of cyclotron frequency are employed to increase the resolution of ICR mass spectrometer without increasing the magnetic field. The detection electrodes consist of M (where M is an integer) identical electrodes arranged in M-fold symmetry about the axis of the coherent cyclotron motion of the observed ions. In an ion cyclotron having four points of voltage in space, the cyclotron electrodes are set up in clockwise symmetric fashion. To increase the resolution in signal detection resulting from the potential induced by ions moving in orbits in the specrometer, the first and third voltages are added and the second and fourth voltages are subtracted from the sum of the first and third voltages.
