    • A variable ratio transmission having an infinitely variable ratio, for enabling a tidal turbine (10) or the like running at relatively low but continuously varying speeds, to drive smoothly a constant speed machine, such as a synchronous generator or the like, without excessive transient torques. A preferred transmission includes a primary differential gear train (120), having a driven input (50), and a driving output, wherein the ratio of the input speed to output speed is variable, and wherein said ratio is governed by the reaction torque provided by speed controlling gearing (150) within the primary differential (120), the transmission including a secondary differential gear train (220), which is in rotational communication with the input (50) via a first route (115), and is in rotational communication with the speed controlling gearing (150) via a second different route (125), wherein the secondary differential gear train includes two parallel power paths.

    • A rotatable drive mechanism is disclosed for a power generating apparatus 5. The drive mechanism provides a link between an electrical generator 20 and a turbine 10, for example a wind or water turbine. In use the turbine 10 rotates at variable speed and the rotatable drive mechanism produces a fixed speed output to generator 20. The drive mechanism includes a differential gearbox 16 which has two output shafts; one driving the generator 20 via shaft 26 and another driving an electric machine 30 via gearing 18. In use, a varying reaction torque provided by the electric machine 30 can be used to control the torque and speed at the output shaft 26. The input torque from the turbine 10 is measured at a reaction point of the gearbox 16 and this measurement is used to alter the reaction torque provided by the electric machine 30. In use the electric machine 30 is operated so that the inertia in the gearbox 18 and the inertia of the electric machine 30 is negated, to provide an almost instantaneous change in the reaction torque and thereby to more effectively control the speed of the output shaft 26.

    • A testing device for connection to a relay is provided. The testing device comprises a binding post and a test paddle. The test paddle includes a body portion, a stud, a contact and a handle. The body portion has a stud opening, a contact opening associated with the stud opening and a barrier extending from a first end of the body. The contact extends through the contact opening and is electrically coupled to the stud. The handle is coupled to the body and configured for grasping by an individual's hand to promote insertion and removal of the test paddle from the relay. The binding post includes a cover configured for rotating the binding post, the cover having an inner chamber for receiving an insert of the binding post. The insert is configured to couple test equipment to the stud on the test paddle for testing relay switches.
