    • The invention provides a method and device for determining the heading with wind (or with current) of an air (or sea-going) vehicle. The device of the invention comprises a support element with two coaxial compass cards, one of which is assigned to the heading without wind and the other serves as indication of the heading with wind, as well as a plurality of rings which may be mounted for rotation coaxially with said compass cards and in the coronal space therebetween. Each of the rings corresponds to a particular situation of the aircraft determined by a wind speed/aircraft speed ratio and has a pointer intended to be oriented along the wind bearing. A series of lines ensures the correspondence between the compass cards.

    • A mechanical calculating device is provided which is particularly useful in determining the relationship of the heavenly bodies to specific heavenly positions at different times. The device, in the embodiment to be designed, comprises a base, a first disc rotatably mounted on the base, which has inscribed about its periphery a ring scale divided into twelve sectors each marked with a different Zodiacal sign, and each sector is subdivided into thirty indices each representing one degree of arc. A plurality of transparent discs are rotatably mounted on the base in concentric relationship with one another and with the first disc, the latter discs representing the sun, the moon and the various planets. The latter discs are each provided with an identifying tab, and each is inscribed with a series of lines extending outwardly from a common point adjacent to the tab at selected angles to one another, with each line having a selected color. In operating the device, the various discs are rotated to specific angular positions, as indicated by the tabs and which are established by the astrological calendar known as the Ephemerus which charts the positions of the planets at particular times and dates. In this manner, the transiting planets may be seen in relation to one another.

    • A race horse selector includes three discs mounted on a common pivot pin behind a cover disc. Different sized discs are used to expose the outer margins. The margins are divided into equal sectors and numbers 1-12 randomly distributed thereon. The cover member has four spaced openings, one spanning all three discs to identify the win, place and show horses, and/or a Trifector race selection, an opposite one spanning the two outer discs to identify a Quinella or Perfecta race selection and two intermediate openings exposing the smallest and largest discs to identify the second half of a Daily Double and other selections. A locating tab on each disc extends radially outwardly of the cover disc with an outer clamp member extended back over or into the cover disc. Locating indicia on the back permits positioning the tabs such that a number sector is aligned within the openings, without viewing the openings. The bettor positions all three tabs and then reverses the assembly to uncover the numbered sectors on the discs aligned with the four openings.

When the part of the anatomy to be x-rayed has been measured and that part listed on the intermediate disc has been positioned relative to the lower disc, the peak kilovoltage range will appear opposite the chart on the upper disc and values of time, electrical current and the product thereof for various kilovoltages can be read therefrom for setting an x-ray machine. The chart can also be moved relative to the upper disc.

    • A planisphere for providing displays and effecting calculations in both astronomy and navigation and the method of operation thereof. The planisphere structure includes a plurality of substantially circular, concentric, flat dials which are progressively larger in diameter toward a central, largest diameter dial on both sides of the central, largest diameter dial. The dials are pivotally mounted centrally and have both astronomy and navigation oriented scales as well as star and polar azimuthal equidistant projection maps thereon. Reference rules and scale indicators, Greenwich indicators and Aries indicators, the latter three of which are part of specific planisphere dials, extend radially outwardly of the largest diameter dial on both sides of the planisphere and are connected together radially outwardly of each other respectively so that they may be readily moved relative to each other in angularly positioning the dials in operation of the planisphere. An altitude and azimuth circle reference indicator is provided with the planisphere to aid in triangulation operations and determining relative altitude and azimuth of celestial bodies when it is located on the assumed coordinate position of the navigator.

    • A calculating device and a mechanical method of calculating win, place and show odds for events such as horse races having pari-mutuel wagering systems. The apparatus includes a base member and a pair of slideable members laterally displaceable relative to the base member. A transparent cursor having a hairline located thereon is also laterally displaceable relative to the base member and to the slideable members. In an alternative embodiment, the members and the cursor are rotationally displaceable relative to the base member. The device is arranged so that indicia on a first scale which represent the amount in a wager pool of interest may be positioned relative to a second scale so that the hairline on the cursor may be adjusted to the amount bet on a horse of interest. The win odds of the horse of interest may be directly read beneath the cursor on a third scale and those odds may be calculated in terms of dollars returnable for a given bet on a fourth scale. To calculate place odds, a reference representing track take-out on the second slideable member is set at the amount bet on the horse of interest on the first scale and the percentage of the pool wagered on the other horse which may be expected to share the pool is read on the second scale. The hairline of the cursor is then positioned adjacent to that percentage found on the indicia of the second slideable member so that the odds may be read on a place scale on the base member at the cursor hairline. Show odds are similarly calculated by summing the amount of the two additional horses which may be expected to share the show pool so that the odds on the horse of interest are read directly on a show scale on the base member.
