    • A method of routing traffic through a packet network having a mesh physical topology. At least two types of network primitive are defined, each type of network primitive providing a respective model of traffic forwarding through at least two neighbor nodes of the network. A network model encompassing at least a portion of the network is constructed using a set of two or more interconnected network primitives. The network model has nodes and links corresponding to respective nodes and lines of the network. Respective forwarding information is computed for each node of the network model. For each node of the network model, the respective computed forwarding information is installed in a forwarding database of the corresponding node of the network, such that traffic is forwarded by each node of the network in accordance with the respective computed forwarding information.

An alarm panel includes an alarm controller configured to monitor one or more points for an indication of an alarm condition and a network controller. The network controller includes a proxy server configured to present multiple proxies on an internal network and to receive multiple unicast packets, each proxy of the multiple proxies associated with an alarm panel of multiple alarm panels and each unicast packet of the multiple unicast packets directed to one of the proxies of the multiple proxies; and a multicast component to combine the multiple unicast packets received within a specified interval of time into a multicast packet.

    • A system and method for synchronizing a plurality of networked fire alarm panels is disclosed. A plurality of fire panels (i.e., nodes) are arranged on a peer-to-peer network, such as a token ring network. One node is designated as a SyncHost, and the remaining nodes are periodically reset to the clock time associated with the SyncHost to ensure all nodes remain substantially synchronized to a single time. As such, when an alarm condition is signaled, the visual notification devices (i.e., strobe lights) of all the fire panels (nodes) will flash at substantially the same time, in accordance with government guidelines. To accomplish the synchronization, the SyncHost sends periodic attendance polls around the network, noting the transit times of the polls. The individual nodes on the network also note times associated with the polls. The SyncHost sends a sync message to the nodes, and each of the individual nodes resets its internal clock according to the sync message and internal compensations calculated that are based on the attendance poll transit times. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.
