摘要： A method of detecting one or more compounds, chemicals or contaminants in a substrate by mass spectrometry is disclosed. A non-living substrate is analyzed by contacting the substrate with a diathermy knife. An electric current is applied to the diathermy knife such that the diathermy knife vaporizes a portion of the substrate. The vapor is aspirated via a sampling tube pumped by a venturi pump into a vacuum chamber of a mass spectrometer. Analyte molecules are aspirated into the vacuum chamber whereupon they impact a surface of the vacuum chamber and are ionized to form analyte ions which are then mass analyzed.

摘要： A method and device for separating ions according to their ion mobility are disclosed. An ion guide is provided having a plurality of electrodes arranged to form an ion guiding path that extends in a closed loop. RF voltages are supplied to at least some of the electrodes in order to confine ions within said ion guiding path. A DC voltage gradient is maintained along at least a portion of a longitudinal axis of said ion guide, wherein the voltage gradient urges ions along the ion guide such that the ions separate according to their ion mobility as the ions pass along the ion guide. As time progresses the portion of the ion guide along which the DC voltage gradient is maintained is moved along the ion guide. An ion exit region is provided which moves around said ion guide such that ions exit said ion guide at different locations at different times. The present invention allows ions to exit the ion guide after the ions have been separated and without having to wait until the ions reach a fixed exit point, by which time the ions may re-merge with other ions.

摘要： A method of mass spectrometry or ion mobility spectrometry is disclosed wherein a sample is ionized by an electrified sprayer so as to produce multiply charged analyte ions of a first polarity in gas-phase. A reaction region is provided downstream of the electrified sprayer, wherein the reaction region is maintained substantially at atmospheric pressure and is maintained substantially free of electric-fields. A gas flow is provided from said electrified sprayer to said reaction region such that the gas flow carries the analyte ions from the electrified sprayer into the reaction region. Free electrons or reagent ions of a second polarity are generated in the reaction region, wherein the second polarity is opposite to said first polarity. The free electrons or reagent ions are then reacted with the analyte ions in the reaction region so as to reduce the charge state of the multiply charged analyte ions and thereby produce charge-reduced analyte ions.
