摘要： A personal digital assistant module with a local CPU, memory, and I/O interface has a host interface comprising a bus connected to the local CPU and a connector at a surface of the personal digital assistant for interfacing to a bus connector of a host general-purpose computer, providing direct bus communication between the personal digital assistant and the host general-purpose computer. In an embodiment, the personal digital assistant also stores a security code. The personal digital assistant according to the invention forms a host/satellite combination with a host computer having a docking bay, wherein upon docking a docking protocol controls access by the host to memory of the personal digital assistant based on one or more passwords provided by a user to the host. In another embodiment the personal digital assistant also has an expansion port connected to the local CPU, and expansion peripheral devices may be connected and operated through the expansion port. Docking structures and cooling apparatus and methods are disclosed.

摘要： A digital scanner includes a multipurpose registration member that has a document registration edge locate surface, a carriage horizontal locate surface, a carriage vertical locate surface, and a platen locate surface. The platen locate surface provides registration for a transparent platen and the document registration edge locate surface provides registration for a registration edge member. The carriage horizontal locate surface and the carriage vertical locate surface provides registration for a scanning carriage which abuts the slide pad. Also, the multipurpose registration member includes a document handle locate surface to registration a document handler. The inclusion of these locate surfaces on a single registration member enables efficient assembly, without extraneous manual adjustments, of a digital scanner having proper registration.

摘要： A magnifying device for magnifying an object and displaying the object on a monitor is disclosed. The magnifying device includes a hand held unit and a base unit. The hand held unit includes a solid state camera which is mounted in a housing. The housing is supported above the text to be enlarged by a set of legs having rollers extending therebetween, to allow the hand held unit to be easily and smoothly moved across the text. The hand unit includes a focusing control and a zoom control. The focusing and zoom controls are interconnected so that the image will not have to be refocused if the magnification of the image is changed. The camera converts the image to an electrical signal which is sent to the base unit. The base unit includes inverting circuitry to convert the image from black on white to white on black, if desired. The base unit can be connected either to video monitor or a standard television. When connected to the television, the devise will not impair normal use of the television when the unit is turned off. All controls for the device are located on the hand unit to be easily accessible at all times.

摘要： A scanner for reading characters from a string of characters recorded on a substrate. The scanner includes a character scanner that is used with a stroking motion parallel to the string of characters that permits the user to view the line being scanned as the scanner is moved across the page. A line-by-line scanner with a wide area of view may be mounted along the side of the scanner to be used in scanning a page or column on a line-by-line basis. The character scanner may include a lens of variable magnification so as to accommodate variable size print. A microphone mounted on the scanner permits the input of voice sound information. The scanner may be in communication with a computer through a cable or a wireless transmitter/receiver. The value of each pixel detected by the scanner is determined by comparing the light reflection value with a threshold that is adjusted in accordance with the values of pixels detected and averaged over previous frames. The hand-held scanner may be housed in any elongate housing for pen-like use or in a palm-held housing such as a typical mouse. An image splitter may be included within the optics to generate two separate images for separate character recognition processing.

The portable facsimile machine comprises a main body performing a facsimile function and a power source adaptor provided separately from the main body. The portable facsimile machine is further provided with an attaching mechanism for detachably attaching the power source adaptor to the main body. The contact terminals of the power source adaptor automatically make contact with the contact terminals of the main body when the power source adaptor is attached to the main body by means of the attaching mechanism. Further, a portable facsimile machine comprises a main body performing a facsimile function and a scanning unit provided on the main body which can be either in a position where the scanning unit is attached to the main body or in a position where the scanning unit is separated from the main body. A line sensor is moved for scanning the object, thereby a distance between the line sensor and the object is measured, and the object is imaged while controlling an optical system based on data of measured distance so that an object image is in focus on the line sensor. This allows all over the object surface to be in focus, whereby the clear image without blur is obtainable.
