    • An endoluminal lasing system for treating vascular disorders is disclosed. Treatment comprises an elongated member that conveys laser radiation to tissue and a motorized mechanism, through which elongated member is rotated. As motor drives, its movement spins elongated member leading to a spiral movement as physician manually moves member in a longitudinal direction. In a preferred embodiment, elongated member is an optical fiber for endoluminal vessel treatment. In another preferred embodiment optical fiber comprises an off-axis firing distal end or side-firing distal end. Optical fiber can be a radial emitting fiber. Spin velocity can be varied according to treatment needs, i.e., pathology, type of vessel, energy source, vessel diameter, etc. One advantage, spiral movement prevents adherence to vessel wall in treatments. Another advantage is that radiation is applied more uniformly along vessel wall. The vessel wall is, thus more evenly treated under most conditions. Treatment velocity and reproducibility are enhanced with this procedure, and human errors are minimized.

    • Devices and transdermal methods are provided for safe and effective therapeutic treatment of the venous system, such as varicose veins. Present invention provides non-invasive and minimally invasive transdermal methods for treating varicose and spider veins, comprising the use of a radiation source in combination with a chemical fluid/composition to safely and more effectively close or shrink vein walls, providing a transdermal therapeutic method for varicose veins until now only treated with surgery or endovascular laser treatments. In a preferred embodiment a device comprises a radiation source, preferably of wavelength between about 980 and 1940 nm, being effective in causing shrinkage of the vein treated. In other preferred embodiments methods comprise the transdermal delivery of a chemical composition through a patch or gel or the injection of a chemical fluid, preferably a hypertonic solution, to the vein under treatment; and simultaneously or after a dwell time, irradiating with a radiation source transdermally. The treatment performed with the present invention results in blood vessel wall damaged, eventually closing the vein, in lesser time with practically no pain or discomfort to the patient during and after the therapy.

    • A minimally invasive method for treating varices including pelvic varices in females, varicoceles, and also oesophageal varices is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of inserting a catheter device into the blood vessels of a patient and advancing the distal end of the catheter to reach the varix or varices. The insertion may be made in the femoral vein or in other vessels as appropriate. Preferably, x-ray, angiography, or other imaging techniques are used to visualize and position the catheter. An optical fiber or optical fiber bundle is then inserted into the catheter and the distal end is advanced to a predetermined point near the varix or varices. Laser energy of preferably 980 nm is then transmitted to the varix to close the blood vessel. Imaging techniques such as angiographies may again be performed to confirm closure of the vein. The method is an out-patient procedure that requires no incision or general anesthesia, requires no recovery time, and does not require that any foreign objects be left in the body. This method has been shown to have a higher success rate than previous embolization and surgical procedures.

    • Device/system and treatment method of varicose veins and other vein abnormalities are presented. Treatment A comprises combining two wavelengths to occlude abnormal veins. Wavelengths are chosen as effective absorption peaks of hemoglobin and/or water, e.g. 980 nm and 1460 nm. Irradiations of blood, collagen and water in the vessel cause occlusion/shrinkage. Constant power-density is used based on fiber withdrawal speed and structural vein parameters. Treatments employ dual laser wavelengths or highly-controlled vein-wall damage wavelengths. Monitored control parameters and predetermined vein structural parameters. Alternatively, 1460+60 nm laser energy is employed, having high absorption in the vein wall, creating little thermal stress outside the vein, and being effective in initiating damage reaction response. Treating at 1460+60 nm has benefits of high vein closure rates and favorable post-operative results, i.e., little post-operative pain/discomfort, brusing/inflammatory reactions, due to their very high absorption in small volumes of the collagen/water in vein walls.

    • A device and method is described for photodynamic therapy (PDT) to treat hyperproliferative tissue growth in an underskin area within a few centimeters of the skin surface that is not accessible by conventional topical irradiation. The device comprises a plate having an array of openings with hollow micro-needles mounted therein that extend to a specified length on each side. Optical fibers are individually threaded through the micro-needles from the side opposite the treatment area and may be kept together as a bundle for attachment to a laser radiation source. The optical fibers have output ends made to provide a uniform radiation pattern to the underlying tissue. A photosensitizer is administered either systemically or locally and allowed a sufficient time to diffuse into the area of treatment. The laser of selected wavelength is coupled to the fiber bundle which then directs the radiation through the optical fibers to the treatment site.

    • A minimally invasive method for treating varices in especially sensitive areas, including pelvic varices in females, varicoceles, and also oesophageal varices is presented. The method comprises the steps of making a micro incision into the blood vessels of a patient, endoscopically inserting a catheter device into the blood vessel of a patient and advancing the distal end of the catheter to reach the varix or varices. Insertion can be made in the femoral vein and advanced using a catheter. A first localizer is placed on the distal end of said catheter to allow use of x-ray, angiography, or other imaging techniques to visualize and position the catheter. An optical fiber is then inserted into the catheter and the distal end is advanced to a predetermined point near the varix or varices. A second localizer is present on the distal end of said optical fiber to allow use of x-ray, angiography, or other imaging techniques to visualize and position the optical fiber as well. Optical fiber distal end is preferably a slim, radial 360 degree emitting fiber end. Laser energy of preferably 1470±30 nm is then transmitted to the varix to close the blood vessel. Other wavelengths with similar or greater absorption in blood/water than at 1470 nm are also effective. Imaging techniques such as angiographies may again be performed to confirm closure of the vein. The laser source linked to a radial emitting fiber allows for thermo occlusion of varicoceles using about 2-3 W of emitting power with little or no pain or discomfort for patient. The present invention is an out-patient procedure that requires no anesthesia and minimal recovery time, and does not require that any foreign objects be left in the body. This method has been shown to have a high success rate and minimum pain or side effects for the patient.

    • A device and method for treating a vagina's anatomic, functional and aesthetic conditions are disclosed. Device comprises a laser energy source which conveys laser energy through an optical fiber handpiece. A cylindrical/penis shaped device/applicator is specially designed for safe and accurate irradiation of determined parts of vaginal mucosa. Applicator has an inner hollow path through which optical fiber is inserted to irradiate interior vaginal tissue. Irradiated mucous tissue contracts, reducing vaginal radius and during penetration in sexual intercourse it embraces penis more tightly. Sensitivity is substantially improved and sexual intercourse is more pleasurable for both partners. In one embodiment, a 1470 nm diode laser source is used. In another embodiment, a vagina's outer dimensions are accurately measured and surgery is performed to achieve dimensions according to certain aesthetic and functional criteria. Minimum pain and risk of side effects are experienced with this ambulatory procedure performable in a physician's office.
