    • One embodiment provides a method and a system for expediting content delivery in a peer-to-peer overlay network. A local cache and directory server caches a multiplicity of segments for multi-media content, and maintains a mapping between cacheable content and one or more local partner nodes that transiently stage segments for the cacheable content. The local cache and directory server receives a request identifying requested content, which may or may not be cached or mapped. The cache and directory server determines a match to the requested content in the mapping and sends a list of local partner nodes that transiently stage segments for the requested content based on the match.

    • One embodiment of the present invention relates to a system for managing files which facilitates making the files permanently unreadable. During operation, the system maintains file-class keys at a file manager, wherein the file-class keys are associated with different classes of files. If a file belongs to a class of files, the system ensures that whenever the file is stored or updated in non-volatile storage that the file is encrypted with an associated key-manager-file-class key for the class of files. The system makes an entire class of files permanently unreadable by causing an associated key-manager-file-class key, which can be used to decrypt the class of files, to become permanently unreadable.

    • One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that selects data records from versioned data. The system operates by receiving a query from a client to select data records from a data source that match a criteria specified by the query. Note that the data source includes at least one data record which has been modified at least one time, to create multiple versions of the data record. The system performs the query on the data source, which includes performing the query on multiple versions of the data record. Finally, the system returns results of the query to the client.

    • A system that estimates a dominant computational resource which is used by a computer program. During operation, for each basic block in the computer program, the system determines a nesting level for the basic block. Next, the system selects basic blocks with nesting levels greater than a specified threshold. For each selected basic block, the system analyzes the basic block to estimate the dominant computational resource used by the basic block. The system then uses the estimated dominant computational resources for the selected basic blocks to estimate the dominant computational resource for the computer program.

    • One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that for facilitating assessment of collision between a primary principal and a non-primary principal for early warning. During operation, the system periodically performs the following operations: The system obtains a current observation of the primary principal and non-primary principal. The system then assesses one or more future states for the primary and non-primary principals, respectively, based on: the current observation of the primary and non-primary principals, a dynamics model of the primary principal, and a mental-state model of a person associated with the primary principal. The system further produces one or more results which indicate an assessment of collision between the primary and non-primary principals.
