    • A method and apparatus for pinch perforating multi-ply web material to increase the perforation ply bond and/or perforation ply bond retention by pinching the multiple plies of web material together and then perforating the material using an anvil and perforator blade design provided on a perforating apparatus. Specifically, the apparatus comprises a roll mounted contoured perforator blade which cooperates with a beveled anvil to produce perforation ply bonds perpendicular to the length of the multiple plies of web material. The desired anvil/perforator blade interface angle between 0.degree. and 20.degree. is provided by beveling the anvil. A 15.degree. beveled anvil is preferred to provide a 5.degree. anvil/perforator blade interface angle. By pinching and bonding the leading edges and other predetermined points of the multi-ply tissue paper together before cutting, the likelihood of ply separation, missing plies and ply mismatch is greatly reduced.

    • A multi-ply tissue includes a first cellulosic embossed ply having an emboss pattern applied over a portion of its surface and a second cellulosic embossed ply of tissue. The first ply is contact laminated to the second ply so that the primary adhesion between the plies of tissue is the result of contact between cellulosic fibers. The first and second plies contact one another in contact-areas, with the contact areas between the first and second plies defining compliant voids. The contact areas between the first ply and the second ply are elongated and/or rounded contact areas. A method of forming a multi-ply tissue involves conveying a base sheet through a nip between an impression roll and a pattern roll to produce an embossed base sheet having a back side possessing projections, applying adhesive to the back side of the embossed base sheet at spaced apart locations, and applying a flat backing sheet to the back side of the embossed base sheet so that the backing sheet adheres to the back side of the embossed base sheet at said spaced apart locations. A method of producing an embossed tissue involves successively conveying a base sheet through a nip between a first impression roll and a pattern roll, and conveying the base sheet through another nip between the pattern roll and a second impression roll, wherein the second impression roll is made of rubber having a lower hardness than the rubber from which the first impression roll is made.

    • Adhesive is applied to a web by way of a printing plate and reverse enclosed doctor blade so as to apply the adhesive in selected locations thereby minimizing the amount of adhesive applied in order to decrease the stiffness of the resultant multi-ply web. The amount of adhesive build up on the embossing rolls due to the adhesive bleeding through the web material is minimized and the embossing rolls are permitted to clean themselves in that the adhesive application is carried out so that adhesive is not applied to the web material adjacent portions of the embossing roll on successive rotations of the roll. By doing so, portions of the backup roll which support the web where adhesive was previously applied are permitted to selfclean by allowing the adhesive which has bled through the web and collected on the backup roll to dry and flake off prior to adhesive again being applied to the web adjacent such region.
