    • A method and apparatus for estimating a signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) are disclosed. A received signal includes signal energy on multiple basis functions. Desired signal energy in the received signal is transformed onto a first basis function with constant polarity. The desired signal energy is estimated by coherently averaging signal energy on the first basis function. A noise power is estimated by averaging signal energy on each basis function other than the first basis function and accumulating the averaged signal energy from the basis function other than the first basis function and scaling the accumulated signal energy to account for a noise estimate from the first basis function. An SIR is estimated by dividing the desired signal energy by the noise power.

    • The present invention is related to a method and apparatus for estimating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based on dedicated physical channel (DPCH) pilot symbols in a wireless communication system. A receiver receives a DPCH transmission and a despreader despreads the received DPCH transmission. A selector selects pilot symbols in the despread DPCH transmission. A signal power estimator estimates signal power based on the pilot symbols, and a noise power estimator estimates noise power based on the received DPCH transmission. A SNR estimator estimates an SNR based on the signal power estimation and the noise power estimation. The noise power estimator may calculate the noise power estimation either based only on pilot symbols or based on both pilot symbols and non-pilot symbols. The DPCH transmission may be transmitted using more than one antenna for transmit diversity.

    • A method and system for generating a channel quality indication (CQI) for a communication channel established between a transmitter and a receiver. A signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) estimate of the communication channel is calculated and a correction term is generated based on a data packet transmitted by the transmitter. A corrected SIR is generated by combining the SIR estimate and the first correction term. The corrected SIR is mapped to a CQI value. The CQI value is sent to the transmitter in order to adjust the configuration of the next data packet transmitted by the transmitter. The first correction term may be generated by subtracting a target packet error rate (PER) from a filtered binary signal derived from negative-acknowledgement (NACK) signals and acknowledgement (ACK) signals which respectfully indicate whether or not errors exist in data packets transmitted by the transmitter.
