    • Described embodiments adapt one or more taps of a decision feedback equalizer of a receiver by setting a reference voltage for each of one or more data recovery comparators to a corresponding predetermined initial value. The data recovery comparators generate a bit value for each sample of a received signal. A tap adaptation module of the receiver selects a window of n received bit samples. The tap adaptation module iteratively, for each of the one or more data recovery comparators, tracks (i) a detected number of bits having a logic 0 value, and (ii) a detected number of bits having a logic 1 value. The tap adaptation module adjusts, based on a ratio of the detected number of bits having a logic 0 value to the detected number of bits having a logic 1 value, the reference voltage for the corresponding data recovery comparator by a predetermined step amount.

    • A method for modifying the performance of an adaptive equalizer in a receiver is provided. A carrier wave comprising a first polarization state and a second polarization state, wherein there is a correlation between the first polarization state and the second polarization state, is received. The first polarization state and the second polarization state are demultiplexed to generate two respective constellations. A first expected value based on the first constellation, and a second expected value based on the second constellation, are calculated. An adaptive equalizer receives a first and second signals associated with the respective polarization states. The adaptive equalizer generates outputs based on the signals. These outputs are used to generate error values. Feedback is input into the adaptive equalizer, wherein the feedback is based on the error values.

    • In one embodiment, a receiver has a reference generator and a main equalizer. The reference generator equalizes a received signal using one or more pilot reference signals. Then, the reference generator decodes one or more predetermined data channels of the equalized signal, makes hard decisions on the data of each decoded channel, and regenerates the original coding sequence of each decoded channel. The main equalizer uses each re-encoded channel as an additional reference signal along with one or more pilot signals to equalize a time-delayed version of the received signal. In alternative embodiments, the receiver might also have a step-size generator which selects optimum step sizes from a look-up table based on the number of re-encoded channels and the power of those channels. The step size is then used by the main equalizer along with the re-encoded channels to equalize the time-delayed received signal.

    • A receiver detects and recovers data from Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed (OFDM) symbols, which include pilot sub-carriers as well as data bearing sub-carriers. The receiver comprises a channel estimation processor and a channel estimate post processor. The channel estimation processor includes a pilot acquisition unit adapted to generate a sample of the channel transfer function for each pilot sub-carrier in a received OFDM symbol, and a channel estimator which is arranged to generate an estimate of the channel transfer function providing samples of the channel transfer function at each sub-carrier position in the received OFDM symbol from the pilot derived samples provided by the pilot acquisition unit. The channel estimate post processor is arranged to process the estimate of the channel transfer function received from the channel estimation processor to generate a processed version of the channel transfer function. The channel estimate post processor includes a controller, and a plurality of prediction filters. The controller is arranged to filter the estimate of the channel transfer function produced by the channel estimation processor using the plurality of prediction filters to form the processed version of the channel transfer function to effect of reducing noise in the processed version of the channel transfer function with respect to the estimate of the channel transfer function provided by the channel estimation processor.
