    • A method and apparatus for providing access of a user equipment to a data network via a wireless communication system is provided. According to an embodiment of the invention, a method of providing access of a user equipment to a data network via a wireless communication system, the user equipment having an associated subscription profile, the wireless communication system utilizing access point identifiers for associating subscribers with specific packet data networks, said subscription profile including at least one access point identifier, the method comprises; setting subscriber profile parameter data in said subscription profile; receiving a first message sent from said user equipment requesting connection using a first access point identifier; determining on the basis of said subscription profile whether or not said user equipment may be connected using the first access point identifier; and dependent on the determination being negative and dependent on the subscriber profile parameter data being set, providing access to a packet data network using a different access point identifier.

    • User equipment (UE), for communicating wirelessly with communication networks, is disclosed, the UE being adapted so as to be capable of voice communication with communication networks via a plurality of mechanisms, the plurality of mechanisms comprising at least one packet-switched (PS) mechanism and at least one circuit-switched (CS) mechanism. The UE is further adapted, when at a location at which the UE is able to communicate wirelessly with a particular communication network, to communicate with the network to determine which voice communication mechanisms the network is adapted to use. The UE is further adapted to select a voice communication mechanism according to a result of the determination and according to said plurality of mechanisms the UE is adapted to use, and to provide voice communication with the network via the selected mechanism.     • In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for providing a short messaging service for a device to enable communication of a short message over an Internet Protocol (IP) network, the device adapted to access a telecommunications system communicatively coupled to the IP network, the IP network comprising one or more network nodes, the method comprising: subscribing to an attachment notification, the attachment notification indicating that the device has attached to the telecommunications system and is contactable for communication, said subscribing being performed by a network element communicatively coupled between the device and the one or more network nodes; receiving, at the network element, the attachment notification when the device has attached to the telecommunications system, the attachment notification comprising identification information for the device; and registering the device with at least one of the one or more network nodes for communication of short messages over the IP network, said registering being performed by the network element based on at least some of the identification information received in the attachment notification.

    • A method of handover of a User Equipment (UE) from first to second Radio Access Network (RANs), the second RAN coupled to a Mobility Controller (MC) and having an association with the first RAN, the UE capable of communication with a Session Transfer Controller (STC) via the first and second RANs, includes receiving a first message at the MC from the first RAN requesting handover of the UE to the second RAN, sending a second message from the MC to the STC subscribing the MC to status updates from the STC, said status updates relating to status of a call, receiving one of said status updates at the MC originated by the STC, dependent on a communication via the first RAN from the UE to the STC of a change in the status, and in response to receipt of said status update, updating a call status indicator of the MC.

    • The present invention relates generally to communication systems, and more specifically, but not exclusively to a method and apparatus for quality of service control for a user equipment in a communication system comprising a home network with respect to the user equipment and a visited network. In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of quality of service control for a user equipment in a communication system comprising a first network and a second network, the first network being a home network with respect to said user equipment and the second network being a visited network with respect to said user equipment, the method comprising: receiving authorisation information at said user equipment from the first network, said authorisation information having data related to an entitlement to quality of service for said user equipment; holding said authorisation information at said user equipment; performing a comparison of said entitlement to quality of service with a quality of service provided by the second network; and in dependence on said comparison, sending a message from said user equipment to the second network requesting an upgrade of quality of service.
