    • A doctor blade holder has two holder parts (4, 5) to clamp a doctor blade (3) with a straight edge therebetween. The holder parts define opposed holder surfaces (6, 7), which, at least in part, form surfaces of an elliptical cylinder which has a cross-sectional form in the shape of an ellipse (Z) which has a longitudinal axis (B--B) which intersects the longitudinal axis (A--A) of the cylinder by an angle of inclination (.alpha.) which, customarily, is in the order of between 0.1.degree. to 1.degree., but may be substantially larger. The minor half-axis of the ellipse (Z) is equal to the radius (r) of the printing machine cylinder (1) and the major half-axis of the ellipse (Z) is longer than the length (1) of the printing machine cylinder against which the doctor blade edge is engaged.

    • To deflect a moving paper web to respective transport paths (16, 17, 21, 25) by a cutter cylinder - counter cylinder combination (7, 8), the cylinders are oscillated back and forth above the respective transport paths by being retained in journal bearings which are eccentric with respect to the axes of rotation of the cylinders, so that, as the cylinders rotate, the nip between the cylinders will be in alignment with the respective transport path, the shift directing the leading edge of the web to a respective transport path. The cylinders, each, carry a knife and a counter element diametrically located with respect to each other, so that, as the leading edge of the web is gripped between a respective transport path, the web is severed thereafter and as the cylinder moves into alignment with the other transport path to feed the leading edge of the web to the other transport path for subsequent cutting, and so on.

    • To permit re-lining of a printing machine cylinder (9), while retaining the printing machine cylinder in adjusted position with respect to a reference, for example an associated cylinder, the side wall (1) of the printing machine is formed with an opening (2) sufficiently large to permit placing of a sleeve (14) over the cylinder. The cylinder shaft (8) is retained, prior to re-lining, in eccentric adjustment by a jaw chuck (3), preferably having three jaws (16, 17, 18) arranged in a star pattern and surrounding the shaft or the bearing, or an eccentric element thereof; the jaws of the jaw chuck are so placed that they can be withdrawn to clear the opening. To determine a previously adjusted position of the jaws of the jaw chuck, and thus a predetermined position of the cylinder with respect to the reference, after withdrawal of the jaw chucks, stop elements (10; 22, 23, 24) are associated with the jaw chucks so that, upon gripping the bearing (7) of the printing cylinder after a prior withdrawal, a previously adjusted position of the cylinder (9 ) will be reestablished.

    • To move a plurality of interconnected segments which a zig-zag, accordeon or bellows pleat arrangement on or between which sheet elements such as projecting elements from a folded sheet are located along a transport path and to permit, selectively, expansion or compression of the segments for handling of sheet elements, and compact storage, an endless belt, preferably a gear belt sprocket chain or the like, is provided engageable with the segments. Preferably, lifting rollers are provided, selectively engageable with the belt to slightly raise the segments from transport rails, and decrease friction of the segments with respect to the rails. The segments can be stored, when empty or loaded, when collapsed against each other, and spread apart for sheet material handling. A plurality of such system can be located or adjacent each other, so that, when the segments are spread apart, suitable mixing or insertion steps can be carried out. To permit a space-saving arrangement, the transport path can be sinuous, with 180.degree. rotating elements, having carrying rods engaging the segments coupled to a disk, turning the segments about an arcuate path defined by the travel of the carrying rods on the disk. The segments can be raised, again, by placing a cam track adjacent the disk, on which the carrying rods can run off by means of cam follower rollers.

    • To compensate for oscillations and bending of a blanket cylinder, and particularly oscillatory behavior under specific operating speeds, underlays between the rubber blanket and the cylinder surface are provided which are of differential thickness, so that, at any given operating speed where the blanket cylinder tends to move away from an associated impression cylinder, the underlay is thickened to thereby maintain essentially uniform printing pressure against the printing substrate (5) under all conditions. The system is equally applicable for plate cylinder - blanket cylinder systems of uniform diameter, as well as for plate cylinder - blanket cylinders of different diameter, and, in the latter case, preferably utilize an underlay blanket which tapers uniformly from a thinner portion to a thicker portion beneath the printed subject matter transferred to the blanket cylinder upon the second revolution of the plate cylinder.

    • To re-orient the position of a sheet, or package of sheets (3), for example after having been folded in a folding former, cut, and transversely folded in a folding knife cylinder, a pair of vertically aligned dish-like plates, or disks (4,5) are moved in an endless transport path. The plurality of such pairs of plates or disks may be provided, each pair being moved in a path by a gear belt (16, 29) driven by a gear or sprocket wheel (20, 30). The plates or disks receive a sheet, or package of sheets (3) therebetween, then are moved towards each other to clamp the sheet therebetween, for example under cam control (25) and a spring (24), and, when the sheets are clamped, additional rotation is supplied to one (4) of the plates or disks, the other (5) being freely rotatable, for example by a stepping motor (37) coupled thereto via a gear transmission and a bushing or sleeve concentric with the shaft driving the sprocket wheel. Alternate pairs of plates or disks (4, 5; 4', 5'; 4", 5") are connected to individual stepping motors and gearing so that rapid handling of sheets, or sheet packages being delivered can be obtained. The system is particularly suitable for combination with multiple folding cylinders since multiple folds can be made by transporting the sheets at full supply speed.

    • To eliminate the necessity for stapling together web portions which are derived, for example, from a rotary printing machine, and superimposed, and which should be joined together, one of the web portions is deflected in a separate path and has a strip of adhesive applied transversely to the direction of movement, for example by passing the web portion between a pair of rollers, one of which has adhesive applied thereto. The web is passed free from contact with the two rollers of the pair, and the uncoated roller, at least, is formed with a projecting strip providing an impression or counter strip to press the web portion against the adhesive coating on the other roller to thereby apply an adhesive strip thereon. The two web portions are then guided into contact with each other and folded in the folding apparatus transversely to the movement at a fold line (19). The projecting strip need not be continuous, but may be a row of projecting bumps or teeth (FIGS. 3, 4) which cooperate with similar bumps and teeth on the other roller, or with a strip.

    • Printed goods (8,8") are aligned and positioned in predetermined staggered or shingled or imbricated arrangement on a transport conveyor (7,15) by placing, between distribution wheels (1,1') located axially spaced on a shaft (2,2'), a group of abutment wheels (4,4') which rotate with the distribution wheels but at a slower speed, for example by having an internal gearing matching a gear wheel (5) located on the shaft (2), the abutment wheels (4,4') being eccentrically positioned with respect to the shaft (2) by being guided in their movement by a disc (3,3') eccentrically positioned with respect to the shaft (2), and held in position by a suitable bracket or the like. These discs (3,3') form cams. The abutment wheels (4,4') are formed with abutment surfaces (6,6',6") against which the printed goods will impinge, to provide for alignment of the front edges and, due to the slower speed of rotation of the abutment wheels, the goods (8") will be pushed out from between adjacent vanes upon continued rotation of both the distribution wheels (1) and the abutment wheels (4). The stagger spacing (x) between adjacent printed elements (8,8',8") will be determined by the spacing between abutments and, if conveyor (7) moves at the same circumferential speed as the abutment wheel, the spacing thereon will be maintained. Grippers (13) can be located to cooperate with the abutments to clamp the leading edge of the printed goods for transport from the distribution wheels independently of gravity, for example to gripper spring (14) of the conveyor chain (15).
