    • A power supply system uses improved Class G amplifier architecture for high bandwidth operation with low distortion. The power supply system switches between multiple power supply rails, depending on the signal level handled by the power supply system. The lowest usable supply rail voltage is chosen to minimize power dissipation in the output driver, thus optimizing efficiency. Each supply rail has an associated driver capable of sourcing current to the amplifier output. When a supply rail is selected, its associated driver is enabled and other driver(s) not associated with the selected supply rail are disabled via separate disable control signals. The disabling of the deselected driver may be delayed until current above a predetermined threshold is sensed at the output of the enabled driver. In addition, the frequency of switching between the power rails may be limited via various means designed to limit distortion in the power supply system.

    • A television receiver is provided including a first mixer having a first input adapted for receiving an input signal in a predetermined frequency range. It should be noted that the input signal may take the form of either a broadcast television signal, a cable television signal, or a digital signal transmitted over a cable delivery system. The first mixer further includes a second input adapted for receiving a first reference signal having a first operating frequency. In use, the first mixer is suitable for outputting an intermediate frequency signal having a frequency greater than at least one frequency in the predetermined frequency range. Also included is a filter for filtering the intermediate frequency signal. A phase shifting network is provided which includes an input adapted for receiving a second reference signal having a second operating frequency. The phase shifting network further includes a pair of outputs. In operation, the phase shifting network is suitable for outputting a pair of quadrature reference signals each having a frequency substantially equal to the second operating frequency. A pair of second mixers each have a first input coupled to the filter and a second input coupled to one of the outputs of the phase shifting network. The second mixer serves for generating output signals that are in quadrature and at a baseband frequency. A pair of low-pass filters are coupled to the second mixers for filtering the output signals.

    • A transport information system provides information and communications to enable the self-directed coordination of multiple vehicles engaged in a transportation service primarily targeted at passengers. The system provides the driver of each vehicle with information comprising a choice of routes or trips requiring service, each with a corresponding fee to be charged to the driver, or an incentive to be paid to the driver. A fee/incentive determiner determines the fees and incentives based on a number of factors, which may include an estimate of fare revenue anticipated for servicing the routes or trips. The transport information system strives to offset differences in fare revenue between the various routes or trips by varying the fees and incentives, thus motivating the drivers to service all the route and trips.

    • A power amplifier controller measures the distortion of a power amplifier output. Based upon the distortion measured, the supply voltage to the PA is adjusted in a control loop. In one embodiment, distortion is measured by computing the ratio of the measured power in the output frequencies outside the desired output channel to the measured power in the output frequencies within the desired channel. If the distortion measured from the PA is higher than a target distortion level, the power supply voltage is raised. If the distortion measured from the PA is lower than the target distortion level, the power supply voltage is reduced. Thus, the supply voltage to the PA is maintained at the lowest possible voltage level, improving the efficiency of the PA.

    • A power amplifier controller for adjusting a supply voltage to a power amplifier. The power amplifier controller adjusts the supply voltage so that distortion in an RF output signal corresponds to a predetermined limit. An amplitude error signal is generated by the power amplifier controller which represents a difference between an RF output signal and an attenuated RF output signal. The AC components of the amplitude error signal are processed to generate a deviation signal that represents the distortion in the RF output signal. The supply voltage to the power amplifier is increased when the deviation signal exceeds a distortion level control signal, and decreased when the deviation signal drops below the distortion level control signal.

    • A converter for the direct down-conversion of direct broadcast satellite signals such as those used for digital television. The direct broadcast satellite signal received from the satellite dish is amplified and then downshifted within the Low Noise Block (LNB), a subsystem contained with the satellite dish assembly, to a predetermined frequency band, typically in the L-band in the range 950 MHz to 2150 MHz.
