    • Briefly, aspects of the subject matter described herein relate to job submission. In aspects, a client (which itself may be a scheduler) sends a request to a scheduler to execute a job. The client may indicate which extensions to a base job submission protocol the client supports. The scheduler may implement a base case protocol and may also implement extensions to the base case. The client and scheduler may communicate information and requests about a job based on extensions both support, if any. The scheduler maintains state information about executing jobs that may include substate information without affecting interoperability with clients that do not recognize substates. A job may be in multiple substates at the same time.

    • A service controller for providing centralized service management, control and placement, as well as guaranteed failover, in a dynamic and distributed computing environment. The service controller works in conjunction with a computing resource supply manager, which supplies the required resources so that the service controller can run the service on the allocated resources. The number of active service instances may dynamically increase or decrease in accordance with changing availability of or demand for resources. The service controller monitors the service instances and takes appropriate action in the event of service instance failures. The service controller is provided with a service director component, which records and tracks, for each service instance which has been started on a particular resource/host, the IP address of such host, through a name location service, thus allowing end-users to locate the service regardless of where the service instances are physically running.

    • To allow a user to access a public data network from a region of service operated by a visited access provider, the visited provider is supplied with an identity of a credit provider. The user is redirected to the credit provider, resulting in establishment of a temporary connection with the credit provider. During this temporary connection, the user supplies original user credentials and, in return, receives substitute user credentials if the original user credentials are valid. The substitute user credentials are supplied to the visited provider, which proceeds to have the user authenticated by the credit provider on the basis of the substitute user credentials. In this way, the visited provider authenticates the user with the credit provider before allowing the user to access the public data network, but a secure exchange of the original user credentials between the user and the credit provider prevents unauthorized access to this information by the visited provider.

    • A method of producing a shaped fibrous fabric structure is similar to that described in the parent application, in that a continuous filament sheet is subjected to a needle punching action, segments are cut from the sheet and these segments are assembled to form an annulus, and then subjected to rotary motion under a reciprocating needling head and continuing to add segments to build up a stack of layers while at the same time continuing the needling action, and lowering the base of the stack relatively to the needling head. However, in a final step, one or more layers of segments are added to the top of the stack, and these are needled into the stack without lowering the stack. Furthermore, these additional layers are preferably made entirely of stapled fibers. Some or all of the layers of segments below the final layers may themselves be made of duplex material comprising continuous filament on which is laid a web of stapled fibers before the duplex material is produced by needling the stapled web to the continuous filaments.

    • Duplex layers of carbon fibre each comprising a lower portion of uni-directional filaments and an upper staple fibre portion are laid one on top of the other in an annular form. Needles are reciprocated through the layers to cause the staple fibre to be pushed downwardly to interconnect the layers. The base supporting the layers being assembled is gradually lowered until there comes a time when the bottom of the needle stroke no longer passes through all of the layers. At that time additional layers comprising staple fibre only are added and needled down into the stack to enrich the lower layers. After that enrichment the stack is then built up by adding further duplex layers. When all of the duplex layers have been added, further staple fibres may be added to the stop of the stack and needled in order to enrich the upper layers with interconnecting staple fibres, which upper layers would otherwise be deficient in interconnecting staple fibre.
