    • A method includes receiving a symbol modulated with multiple bits according to a signal constellation including multiple constellation points. A soft metric is computed for a given bit in the symbol: A first constellation point closest to the received symbol according to a distance measure is found. A row or column of the constellation points, which is closest to the first constellation point according to the distance measure, and over which a value of the given bit is constant and is opposite to the value of the given bit in the first constellation point, is identified. At least the identified row or column is searched for a second constellation point that is closest to the received symbol according to the distance measure. The soft metric is calculated based on the first and second constellation points. The value of the given bit is reconstructed based on the soft metric.

    • Disclosed is a receiver, such as an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) receiver, including two or more receiver chains. Each of the receiver chain may include an antenna, down converting circuitry and time to frequency converting circuitry, and the two or more chains may be adapted to operate in concert so as to receive substantially the same signal substantially concurrently. Signal processing circuitry may be adapted to constructively combine signals received at the two or more receiver chains into a unified signal. Selection logic may be adapted to select a mode of signal combination by the signal processing circuitry, wherein the selection logic may be adapted to instruct the processing circuit to either combine two or more received signals into a single received signal or to use only one of the two or more received signals for further processing.

    • A method includes receiving an input signal carrying transmitted values by a receiver, which includes a decision device that produces estimates of the transmitted values. The input signal is filtered using a forward filter to produce a forward-filtered signal, and the estimates of the transmitted values are filtered using a backward filter to produce a backward-filtered signal. The decision device is applied to a composite signal produced from the forward-filtered and backward-filtered signals, so as to produce the estimates of the transmitted values. An accuracy of the estimates of the transmitted values is assessed, and coefficients of the forward filter are adapted depending on the assessed accuracy.

    • A tuner for a wireless receiver is provided, which may include an input interface that is adapted to receive wireless signals, a mixer that is adapted to select a specific frequency from signals received at the input interface, and a controllable switch that is adapted to lead an output from the mixer towards a base-band unit of the receiver and to disconnect the output. The tuner may further include a controller which may be adapted to operate the controllable switch to disconnect the output of the mixer when the controller studies characteristics of the tuner and to reconnect the output of the mixer at other times. The studied characteristics may be associated with parasitic direct current voltages in the tuner, which may be associated with a low noise amplifier of the tuner, or programmable gain amplifier of the tuner or with both amplifiers. The controller may cause a compensation direct current voltage to be generated and applied to the mixer's output based on the ratio between programmed gain and actual/measured gain of the programmable gain amplifier.

    • A receiver is provided, which is adapted to receive MPE-FEC frames and to correct erroneous sections within a received MPE-FEC frame by detecting unreliable sections and storing in an erasure list (“ESL”) table compressed data that includes the base address of each detected erroneous section, together with the respective section's size. The size of the ESL table may be fixed, or it may correlate, or dynamically change according to the actual number of detected erroneous sections. The data stored in the erasure list may then be forwarded to a decoder to correct erroneous sections. The erroneous sections may be detected by using CRC, and the decoder may be a Reed-Solomon decoder. If the application data table of the MPE-FEC is error-free (or full or errors), in which case the erasure structure list is empty (or full of errors), in which case the erasure structure list is empty (or full), this means that no FEC reception and error corrections are required, because there are no sections to correct in the first case and the decoder is incapable of correcting too many sections in the second case. Therefore, the receiving circuitry, or at least the decoder, may be disabled to save battery power.
