    • A method provides search results for a handheld electronic device including an input apparatus having a plurality of input members, each of at least a portion of which have a plurality of characters assigned thereto. A type of the input apparatus is sent from the device to a server. The device receives a number of activations of a number of the input members, and sends the received number of activations to the server. The server determines a number of possible combinations of the characters based upon the received input apparatus type and the received number of activations, searches for a number of search results as a function of the number of possible combinations of the characters, and sends the number of search results to the device. The device receives the number of search results, and displays at least a portion of the number of search results.

    • Techniques in a wireless device for use in accessing a common data application with a service network which is external to a plurality of wireless networks are described. The device receives a data session configuration file which includes a list of the plurality of wireless networks mapped against authentication credentials associated with each wireless network. The device communicates with a current one the wireless networks. The device selects from the list one of the authentication credentials that is associated with the current wireless network. The device submits, via the current wireless network, the selected authentication credentials for establishing a packet data session via the current wireless network. The device then accesses, via the current wireless network using the packet data session, the common data application with the service network which is external to the current wireless network.

    • A method and system for improved buffering during a flow control event, the system comprising: a mobile station having a mobile timer; a radio network communicating wirelessly with the mobile station and including: a base station; and a packet control function (PCF) capable of interrupting the flow of data to the wireless device during the flow control event; a packet data serving node (PDSN) communicating with the PCF and having a buffer to store data received for the mobile station during the flow control event, the buffer having a buffer timer; and a push function communicating with the PDSN and having a retry timer to indicate when to resend an unacknowledged packet; wherein the system coordinates the buffer timer with either the mobile timer or the retry timer to eliminate redundant messages.

    • Systems and methods are provided for monitoring the deterioration of a rechargeable battery. A battery monitoring system may be used to store charging information, discharge information and storage information for a rechargeable battery to a data store. The charging information may include a number of charge cycles incurred by the rechargeable battery. The discharge information may include a number discharge cycles incurred by the rechargeable battery. The storage information may include information relating to periods when the rechargeable battery is not being actively charged or discharged. The battery monitoring system may be further used to determine an amount of deterioration of a battery performance characteristic based on the stored charging information, discharge information and storage information.

    • One illustrative method for use in efficiently establishing a data connection, such as a Packet Data Protocol (PDP) Context, between a mobile station and a wireless communication network includes the steps of causing at least one data connection request to be transmitted to the wireless network in attempt to establish a data connection between the mobile station and the wireless network; setting a delay timer to an initial value and running the delay timer; if the data connection has not been established in response to transmitting the at least one data connection request, causing at least one subsequent data connection request to be transmitted after expiration of the delay timer set to the initial value; setting the delay timer to a subsequent initial value which is greater than the initial value and running the delay timer; and if the data connection has not been established in response to transmitting the at least one subsequent data connection request, causing at least one other subsequent data connection request to be transmitted after expiration of the delay timer set to the subsequent initial value. This technique continues until the data connection is established with the wireless network, if at all. If a new wireless network is selected during the technique, the process is reset such that the first initial value is again utilized first for the delay timer. Preferably, the technique works in combination with relatively more quick retries implemented in lower radio layer(s) (i.e. the physical, data link, or network layer). Thus, each data connection request may be a plurality of data connection retries which are performed much closer together in time than other retry attempts.
