    • A driving method for an electrophoretic display device that includes opposing first and second substrates provided so as to sandwich an electrophoretic element having an electrophoretic particle, a plurality of first electrodes formed on the first substrate at an electrophoretic element side, and a second electrode which is formed on the second substrate at an electrophoretic element side and is opposed to the plurality of first electrodes. The driving method for the electrophoretic display device includes (a) applying a first electric potential to a part of the plurality of first electrodes, (b) applying a second electric potential different from the first electric potential to a part of any other electrodes of the first electrodes, and (c) driving the electrophoretic element. The second electrode is in an electrically isolated condition.

    • Electrophoretic display devices and contactless communication media are provided. A display electrode pattern, a first voltage application circuit to apply a voltage between the display electrode pattern and a transparent electrode, and a wiring pattern that electrically conducts the first voltage application circuit and the display electrode pattern are provided on the side of the back surface of a substrate. Also, a BG electrode pattern, a loop pattern of a predetermined height, and the transparent electrode are provided on the side of the surface of the substrate. Multiple electrophoretic particles and a dispersion medium to disperse the electrophoretic particles are enclosed inside the loop pattern and between the substrate and the transparent electrode. A voltage is applied between the transparent electrode and the display electrode pattern by the first voltage application circuit thereby causing the electrophoretic particles to migrate in the dispersion medium to display a desired image.

    • Electrophoretic display devices and contactless communication media are provided.     • There is provided a method of driving an electrophoretic display device including a first substrate, a second substrate opposed to the first substrate, a plurality of microcapsules including electrophoretic particles, the plurality of microcapsules being arranged between the first substrate and the second substrate, a plurality of first electrodes formed on the plurality of microcapsules side of the first substrate, the plurality of first electrodes being arranged at a pitch equal to or smaller than an average diameter of the plurality of microcapsules in at least one direction, and a second electrode formed on the plurality of microcapsules side of the second substrate, the second electrode being opposed to the plurality of first electrodes. One or a plurality of the first electrodes are set as a driving unit. During removing a displayed image, the second electrode is in an electrically isolated condition. And electric potentials are applied to the plurality of the first electrodes such that the driving units adjacently located in at least one direction have different electric potentials.
