    • A smaller sized flip dot display utilizes a magnetically actuated pixel that rotates between two orientations. The orientations display two different optical states. A simulated dot matrix design improves the aesthetics and consumer appeal, and also permits a flip dot display capable of producing a positive contrast display image with darker colored “ON” pixels contrasting with brighter background and “OFF” pixels by reducing the visibility of the spacing gap between each rotating pixel and the surrounding background. An interwoven configuration of magnetic actuators with a coil around each arm of a U-shaped core may result in lower power consumption, low production cost, and small size required for use in consumer and small mobile devices such as watches and mobile phones.

    • A miniature actuator, e.g., for use in a Micro Air Vehicle, comprises at least one nested array of magnets, with an outer annular magnet with a magnetization pointing in an axial direction, a middle annular magnet with a radial magnetization, and an inner cylindrical magnet with a magnetization directed anti-parallel to the magnetization of the outer annular magnet. In one embodiment, a permanent magnet actuator comprises such an array, and a conductive coil having a current distributed over the volume of the conductive coil, wherein the magnetic field of the array is perpendicular to the current located in the coil. The coil may be located above or below the first magnetic array. In another embodiment, a conductive coil is disposed between two magnetic arrays. The coil may have a winding that is pancake-shaped, solenoidal, or toroidal and may comprise more than one winding. The magnetic arrays may be canted to permit the toroidal winding to expand, affording control over the spread of the magnetic field in the gap.

    • An integrated load sensing system includes a housing including a coupling pin portion thereof. A bridge circuit includes a set of strain gauges bonded to the coupling pin portion. A bridge circuit excitation, error correction, and amplification (BCEECA) subsystem is operatively connected to the bridge circuit for receiving indications of shear load from the strain gauges, correcting signal error, and amplifying the indications of shear load. The BCEECA subsystem provides amplified output signals. A power conditioning module is operatively connected to the BCEECA subsystem for receiving power from an external power supply and conditioning power to an appropriate state for driving the bridge circuit as well as an appropriate state for error correction and amplification circuitry within the BCEECA subsystem. A logic module compares the amplified output signals to a predetermined signal threshold and provides latching of enunciation in accordance with a selected delay after the threshold is surpassed. An enunciation element providing enunciation of the output signals surpassing the signal threshold in accordance with the logic module. The bridge circuit, the BCEECA subsystem, the power conditioning module, the logic module, and the enunciation element are contained and sealed within the housing. The invention includes a method for in situ testing of a shear load sensing system for a mechanical system.
