    • An optical module is configured such that it is not susceptible to fine particulate matter when an optical fiber is inserted into a fiber insertion hole thereof. The optical module is also configured to prevent any reduction in the optical coupling efficiency and degradation of anti-noise properties with the optical fiber. The optical module includes: a ferrule, having the fiber insertion hole formed on an end surface on which an electrical circuit is formed; a photoelectric conversion element, connected to the electrical circuit and facing the fiber insertion hole; and an optical fiber, optically coupled directly with the photoelectric conversion element. The optical fiber has a glass fiber and a protective coating, and is aligned with the insertion hole with the protective coating interposed therebetween. The optical fiber is retained in the insertion hole with the glass fiber not in contact with the insertion hole.

    • The optical module includes a ferrule having a fiber holding hole, a flexible printed circuit (FPC) board provided to one end of the ferrule, an optoelectric device connected to an electric circuit of the FPC board, and a built-in fiber held in the fiber holding hole in a state in which one end of the fiber faces the optoelectric device, and another end of the fiber is flush with an end surface of another end of the ferrule. The method includes insert-molding a ferrule having a fiber holding hole with one end of the ferrule being positioned with respect to a FPC board; connecting an optoelectric device to an electric circuit of the FPC board; inserting and securing a built-in fiber into the fiber holding hole; and polishing an end surface of the fiber so that an end surface of another end of the ferrule is flush with the end surface of the fiber.

    • To provide an optical connector that enables the reduction in the number of parts and can be easily attached to an optical cable, a concave portion 18 for a ferrule is formed in a plug housing 6, and a ferrule 3 is inserted from the side of a collar portion 10 into the concave portion 18 for a ferrule. A hook portion 28 for a ferrule is provided in a protruding condition inside the plug housing 6. The collar portion 10 is guided by the hook portion 28 for a ferrule, which has been elastically deformed, and moves toward a bottom surface 26 of the concave portion 18 for a ferrule. Where the collar portion 10 reaches a space between the bottom surface 26 and the hook portion 28 for a ferrule, the hook portion 28 for a ferrule is elastically restored. Therefore, even if the collar portion 10 tries to move toward an opening 24 of the concave portion 18 for a ferrule, the collar portion is locked by the hook portion 28 for a ferrule and the movement is inhibited. Thus, in the plug-type optical connector 1, the ferrule 3 can be positioned by inserting into the plug housing 6 and moving.
