    • A virtual token represents an item, and includes embedded data defining rules and/or capabilities which apply to the use of the item. A virtual token may include graphical image data which is used to generate a display on a computer, whereby selection of the display allows the item represented by the virtual token to be used. A virtual token may contain instructions for sending access requests to a location on a communications network. A system for handling virtual tokens includes a clearing and routing house for routing token access requests, authenticating and generating tokens, and maintaining container structures for tokens. The system also includes connectors installed in a communications network for creating, controlling and managing items represented by tokens, and device clients for executing token components that issue access requests to the clearing and routing house.

    • A method and apparatus for image texture analysis in which the image is mapped into a first set of binary representation by a monotonically varying operator, such as a threshold operator. Each binary representation in the first set of binary representations is mapped to a further set of binary representations using a second monotonically varying operator, such as a spatial operator. The result of the two mappings is a matrix of binary image representations. Each binary image representation is allocated a scalar value to form an array of scalar values which may be analysed to identify defined texture characteristics.

    • An optical material comprises a host matrix (e.g. fluorozirconate glass such as ZBLANP) doped with an optical atom pair or ion pair, each pair comprising a sensitizer (e.g. Nd.sup.3+) and an activator (e.g. Pr.sup.3+). The sensitizer is capable of absorbing optical excitation energy of a single wavelength (e.g. in the 800 nm region of GaAlAs diode laser) and transferring this optical excitation energy to the activator. This causes emission of visible and/or infrared light when the activator relaxes back into any of its lower energy states. Optical devices containing the optical material, and methods for generating visible and/or infrared light involving the optical material are also disclosed.

    • The present invention provides a high speed non-blocking buffered banyan packet switching architecture which utilizes parallel switching fabrics to switch slices of serial packets (subpackets) in a parallel manner. Serial digital information is received, converted into parallel form, buffered, and introduced into a parallel interconnect network which provides separate parallel paths for each packet/subpacket of information. The parallel subpackets are multiplexed, switched, demultiplexed, and recombined by way of a parallel-to-serial converter and an output port controller so as to reconstitute the original serial data stream, thereby providing high speed effective data switching at relatively low clock speeds.
