摘要： A method of forming a fiber-reinforced molding compound. The method includes establishing a melt stream of a source material including a first polymeric material having a first melt temperature in an extruder and dosing a composite material into the melt stream. The composite material includes pre-impregnated reinforcing fibers comprising reinforcing filaments and a second polymeric material having a second melt temperature greater than the first melt temperature. The composite material has at least 30% of the reinforcing filaments protected by the polymeric material such that the polymeric material surrounds each filament completely forming a barrier between it and an adjacent filament in the at least 30% of the filaments. The temperature of the melt stream at dosing is below the second melt temperature. The method includes forming a molding compound from the source and composite materials. The method includes dispensing the molding compound to produce a part.

摘要： Continuous fiber tow structures are used to form lattice reinforcing bodies to be embedded in a molded polymer matrix. The lattice structures are formed and shaped to reinforce a portion of a predetermined three-dimensional article. Optionally, some or all of the tow members of the structure may be formed with internal vascular passages for passage of a heat transfer fluid through the structure in the function of the molded polymer article. A liquid polymer is molded around the lattice structure, fully embedding the structure. The liquid polymer which may contain short-reinforcing fibers, is then solidified to form the composite reinforced polymer article. And connections may be made to the composite article for the flow of the fluid through vascular passages in the lattice structure within the article.

摘要： A process of forming infusible, unidirectional fabric containing the steps of arranging a plurality of unidirectional fibers into a unidirectional fabric, forming an emulsion or suspension of a solvent, a bridging polymer, and a film-forming preventing agent, applying the emulsion or suspension to the unidirectional fabric, removing the solvent, and removing the film-forming preventing agent to form an infusible, unidirectional fabric. The infusible, unidirectional fabric contains a plurality of unidirectional fibers, a plurality of bridges, and a plurality of void spaces between the unidirectional fibers. Each bridge is connected to at least 2 unidirectional fibers and at least 70% by number of fibers have at least one bridge connected thereto forming a bridged network of unidirectional fibers. The void spaces are interconnected and the fabric has a volume fraction of voids of between about 8 and 70% and a volume fraction of fibers of between about 35 and 85.
