    • The state of an all-or-none modulated useful signal subjected to a perturbed environment is determined, on reception, through the use of non-modulated reference signals subjected to the same environment. The reference signals have respective frequencies neighboring that of the useful signal and the same initial amplitude so that all of the signals are attenuated in the same manner by environmental perturbations. By comparing against a threshold reference value the differences between the respective amplitudes of the received reference signals and the amplitude of the received useful signal, the "all" and "none" states of the useful signal are accurately determined irrespective of the effect of perturbed environment on the amplitude of the useful signal.

    • A collision avoidance system adapted for railroad use comprising a track having connected thereto a plurality of first signal transmitters exciting the track by a first control signal within a first frequency bandpass range and a plurality of second signal transmitters interspaced between the first signal transmitters in an alternating arrangement, such second transmitters exciting the track by a second control signal within a second frequency bandpass range. While the first and second control signals are respectively within the first and second bandpass range, individual ones thereof are separated by frequency increments from the other control signals within the corresponding bandpass range such that any beats therebetween are of a relatively high frequency. A train riding the track includes a front and rear pickup selectively connected to a dual frequency amplifier across a two-position switch where the amplifier, at its output, connects to a first and second bandpass filter respectively centered at the first and second frequency bandpass. The outputs of the respective filters are rectified and fed to corresponding comparators wherein the signals are compared against a preselected level. The outputs of the comparators are then combined in a logical AND circuit which, across a delay network having a long time constant in the direction of brake engagement and a short time constant in the direction of brake disengagement, operates the brakes of the train. Included also in the train, intermediate the front and rear pickups, is a shunt circuit including the motor of the train, whereby the control signals are attenuated. Thus, the next succeeding train will not receive the shunted control signals and will therefore engage the brakes.

    • A track circuit for railway systems or the like includes a track segment of predetermined length electrically insulated from an adjacent track segment by an electric joint, which includes a conductor and forms two loops arranged in a longitudinal S-shape within the space between the rails. Units are provided that transmit and receive electric signals and that are operatively coupled with the electric joints. The transmitting/receiving units include a unit transmitting and receiving a high-frequency signal to detect a train on the a track segment, and a unit transmitting and receiving a low-frequency signal which provides the carrier encoded with information to be transmitted to a train-based receiving unit. Units are further provided that enable/disable the high-frequency signal transmitting/receiving units, and units that enable/disable the low-frequency signal transmitting/receiving units, which are alternately actuated. The electric joint includes an internal impedance disposed between the two loops.
