The system may form an invisible track using material-impregnated grooves and a radar beam, preventing a vehicle from veering away from a road lane. The material-impregnated grooves (MIGs) within one or more road lanes may include scrap metal. The radar beam may be emitted from a transceiver mounted underneath the vehicle such that backscatter from the MIGs is returned to the transceiver.

The method comprises the following steps: transmitting a microwave transmit pulse of less than 5 feet; radiating the transmitted pulse by a directional antenna system; receiving received pulses by an adjustable receive window; integrating or combining signals from multiple received pulses; amplifying and filtering the integrated receive signal; digitizing the combined signal; comparing the digitized signal to at least one preset or dynamically computed threshold values to determine the presence or absence of an object in the field of view of the sensor; and providing at least one pulse generator with rise and fall times of less than 3 ns each and capable of generating pulses less than 10 ns in duration.

The platform, which itself can be mobile, includes a plurality of UWB transceivers and a trilateration module. The mobile device, which can also have one or more UWB transceivers, exchanges one or more signals with the platform to determine a relative position with respect to the platform through trilateration. With an established relative position established behavior of the mobile device can be augmented. The synchronous capability of UWB signals provides a user with direct control of a mobile device in austere conditions including those in which GPS is denied.

摘要： A navigation system for use in a vehicle (402). The system includes an absolute position sensor, such as GPS, in addition to one or more additional sensors, such as a camera, laser scanner, or radar. The system further comprises a digital map or database that includes records for at least some of the vehicle's surrounding objects (400). These records can include relative positional attributes with respect to a reference axis (404). As the vehicle (402) moves, sensors sense the presence of at least some of these objects (400), and measure the vehicle's relative position to those objects. This information is used to determine the vehicle's instantaneous lateral offset (428) relative to the reference axis (404), and support features such as enhanced driving directions, collision avoidance, or automatic assisted driving. The system also allows new objects (408, 414) to be attributed using relative positioning, and thereby factored into the enhanced navigation features.

The surface condition information from the first vehicle is associated with the determined position of the first vehicle, to know the location at which the surface condition information is pertinent. Via a second communications system on a second vehicle, the surface condition information from the off-vehicle location is received based on location of the second vehicle, so that the operator of the second vehicle is thereby notified of a potentially hazardous road surface condition.
