    • The present invention is directed to a system for providing secured access to a software rental or a postage metering system. The virtual postage meter software of this invention enables a user to print postage indicia on documents, envelopes or labels. To generate valid postage indicia the virtual meter software is executed on a first computer while it is in communication with the remotely located second computer. All communication between the first computer and the second computer utilize data encryption algorithms to preserve the security and integrity of the data transferred. In one embodiment, the second computer is a collection of one or more computers with virtual postage meter enabling software capable of communicating simultaneously to a number of user computers that are concurrently executing the virtual postage meter software. The second computer is connected to one or more US FIPS 140-1 security level 3 or better certified cryptographic devices identified as Postal Security Devices (PSD). The printed postage indicia appears as a two-dimensional barcode that includes digital signature, amount of postage, ZIP code and other relevant information.

    • In a method and apparatus for dependable transmission of data from a data center to terminal equipment, particularly transmission of fee schedule table data to a postage-calculating scale or postage meter machine, new postage fee schedule table data are offered at the data center for future postage calculation. In a first communication between the data center and the terminal equipment, a request for postage fee schedule table data is formed at the terminal equipment and is communicated to the data center, and the data center receives the request and transmits the requested new service data to the terminal equipment, and the terminal equipment receives and stores the new service data. Thereafter a second communication takes place between the data center and the terminal equipment, wherein the terminal equipment forms a message referring to the stored, new service data and this message is communicated to the data center, where it is checked against information generated at the data center from the new service data. Given a positive comparison result the data center transmits a message to the terminal equipment allowing usage of the validated new service data.

    • Systems and methods are provided for validating an address associated with a delivery item. In one embodiment, a computer-implemented method validates addresses associated with a delivery item. The method includes the steps of electronically receiving a data file from a sender, the data file comprising one or more addresses, and determining whether the addresses can be validated with a first weekly file comprising extended delivery codes and a second weekly file comprising delivery point verifications. The method may further include the steps of processing the data file using a database of addresses that are represented in neither the first weekly file nor the second weekly file, based on the determining step, updating the data file to indicate a status the addresses, and sending the updated data file back to the sender.
