    • A display device having a cathode for emitting electrons and a permanent magnet. A two dimensional array of channels extends between opposite poles of the magnet. The magnet generates, in each channel, a magnetic field for forming electrons from the cathode into an electron beam. A screen receives an electron beam from each channel. The screen has a phosphor coating facing the side of the magnet remote from the cathode. The phosphor coating having a plurality of pixels each corresponding to a different channel and each having a plurality of different color sub-pixels. An electrode grid is disposed between the cathode and the magnet for controlling flow of electrons from the cathode into each channel. A plurality of anodes each disposed on the surface of the magnet remote from the cathode, each corresponding to a different channel, and each having a first and second anode respectively extending along opposite sides of the corresponding channel for accelerating electrons through the corresponding channel and for sequentially addressing electrons emerging from the corresponding channel to different sub-pixels of the corresponding pixel. The first and second anodes associated with each channel are skewed relative to the sub-pixels of the corresponding pixel.

    • An inline electron gun for a color cathode ray tube (CRT) directs electron beams through an Einzel lens common to all of the beams for focusing the beams on a display screen across which the beams are scanned in horizontal scan lines in a raster-like manner. The electron gun includes a beam forming region (BFR) for forming the beams in a matrix array including a plurality of vertically spaced, horizontally aligned apertures, where each horizontally aligned group of apertures passes the primary color electron beams for one scan line on the display screen and vertically aligned apertures are grouped to pass common color electron beams which are horizontally deflected in synchronism over adjacent, vertically spaced scan lines on the display screen. All of the electron beams converge and cross over the electron gun's axis at the center of the Einzel lens, with the diverging beams then directed through a convergence arrangement which converges each group of the horizontally aligned beams to a common spot on a given scan line permitting video display information to be presented simultaneously on more than one scan line. The beam convergence arrangement equalizes the vertical and horizontal convergence effects on each of the beams in the matrix array of beams to deflect the outer beams inwardly while deflecting the upper and lower beams respectively downwardly and upwardly so that each group of horizontally aligned beams converge on the center beam of that group at the display screen.

    • A high definition bit mapped page display system for graphics and text utilizing multiple beams in a CRT is disclosed. Information for the several lines which are written simultaneously is made available in parallel. The invention is described in terms of a character set and text generation, but the same principles apply to any other graphic or bit map and to storage in ROMs or loadable RAMs. Eah beam of a multiple CRT tube is biased to generate a portion of a character or graphic as it scans across the tube. It takes 12 lines to scan a character with a N-beam tube, 12 over N character scans are therefore required. With the same scanning speed as with a single beam, this factor can be used to increase definition (i.e. number of lines). The invention utilizes CRTs with shaped electron beams, a bit map for storing bits utilized for generating bit patterns which are used to control the shaped electron beams.
