    • A keyboard apparatus capable of enhancing the return capability of hammer assemblies upon key release to improve the capability of repeated key striking and capable of reducing a height size of action units to make the keyboard apparatus compact. The keyboard apparatus includes hammer assemblies each having a butt disposed pivotable about a hammer pivot shaft and a hammer shank extending from the butt. In a non-key-depression state, the hammer shank obliquely extends downward. As viewed from side, a straight line passing though a gravity center position of the hammer assembly and the hammer pivot shaft forms an acute angle less than 45 degrees relative to a horizontal plane in the entirety of a key depression and key release stroke.

    • A keyboard apparatus capable of being easily designed to have action units whose upper end positions are made low and whose efficiency of drive of whippens is increased. Each of keys of the keyboard apparatus has an upper front part, a bent part extending downward from a rear end of the upper front part, and a lower rear part extending rearward from a lower end of the bent part. An upper surface of a rear end portion of the lower rear part nearly horizontally extends at a height position lower than that of a key fulcrum. Action units are disposed above respective ones of rear end portions of the keys. A driven point of a whippen of each action unit is located at a position lower than the key fulcrum in a non-key-depression state.

    • A keyboard instrument such as an electronic piano comprises a keyboard structure that is basically identical to the keyboard structure of an upright piano except hammer assemblies and a struck portion attached to an action bracket. Each of the hammer assemblies is constituted by a hammer shank and a pseudo hammer, one of which is used to strike the struck portion having a multilayer structure including an elastic member (e.g., a plate spring) sandwiched between buffer materials. The elastic member has a prescribed number of striking areas in correspondence with keys arranged on a keybed, wherein the striking areas are gradually increased in weights and bends (or deflections) in a pitch descending order from higher pitches to lower pitches. Thus, it is possible to simulate weight factors and bends (or deflections) of strings actually struck by hammer felts in an upright piano.

    • To provide an electronic piano maintaining a compact appearance and providing the key touch equivalent to that of an acoustic piano. A hammer equivalent member is composed of a butt, a L-shaped member and a catcher shank. When the butt is pushed up by a jack responsive to the key depression, the hammer equivalent member starts rotating in a direction reverse to the rotary direction of a depressed key. Subsequently, after the jack leaves the butt, the hammer equivalent member continues to be rotated inertially. By contacting the projection of the L-shaped member of the hammer equivalent member, a stopper stops the inertial movement of the hammer equivalent member. The hammer equivalent member is almost equivalent to the hammer assembly of the usual acoustic piano in inertial moment and the angle formed by the center of gravity relative to a virtual perpendicular passing a center pin. Furthermore, the hammer equivalent member is shorter than the hammer assembly in appearance.

A mass body assembly, that is an action member, has a moving fulcrum, a driven section on a first side of the moving fulcrum that is driven by each of the driving sections of the white keys and the black keys, and a center of gravity that is located on a second side opposite the driven section with respect to the moving fulcrum. The distance between the driven section and the moving fulcrum of the mass body assembly for the black key is greater than the corresponding distance for the white key. The mass body assembly on the second side is formed from the same members that are commonly used for both the white keys and the black keys.

    • Disclosed is a modified striking mechanism for use in pianos and related instruments having strings or their equivalent to produce musical notes and keys to select the notes. The mechanism includes a hammer assembly, a lever driving the hammer, coacting gear means for imparting motion to the hammer and features a novel escapement action for use therewith. Additionally disclosed are improvements including an escapement action adapted for use with conventional piano striking mechanisms, a novel damper assembly, a mechanism for activation by the soft pedal of the piano, a tension adjustment mechanism for varying the amount of force necessary to strike a key, and novel balance rail and capstan lever assemblies.
