    • Disclosed herein is a spark plug comprising an insulative sleeve having a central axial bore and an exterior surface and a center electrode extending through the central axial bore of the insulative sleeve. The insulating sleeve is positioned within, and secured to, a metal shell that serves as a mounting platform and interface to an internal combustion engine. The metal sleeve also supports a ground electrode that is positioned in a spaced relationship relative to the center electrode so as to generate a spark gap. The insulating sleeve includes a shaped tip portion that resides in a recessed end portion of the metal shell. A coating is disposed on the exterior surface of the shaped tip portion of the insulative sleeve. The coating comprises a metal oxide, a noble metal, late transition metal, or a combination comprising two or more of the foregoing metals.

    • A spark electrode assembly has an elongate electrode with an inner insulator arranged for operable attachment to a support structure. The inner insulator surrounds the electrode with one end of the electrode positioned adjacent a ground element across a spark gap and another end of the electrode extending relative to the support structure for attachment to a source of electrical power. An outer insulator is spaced radially outwardly from the inner insulator and surrounds the inner insulator generally adjacent the end of the electrode adjacent the ground element. The inner and outer insulators cooperate to inhibit the formation of a continuous lubrication layer thereon, thereby establishing an area generally free from the lubrication layer between the end of the electrode adjacent the ground element and the support structure.

    • A novel spark plug with an outer annular electrode and an inner electrode includes a disk-shaped element supported atop the inner electrode. The gap between the outer electrode and the disk-shaped element of the inner electrode defines an annular firing zone within which the spark travels from the outer electrode to the inner electrode. The disk-shaped inner electrode is solid and planar, and overlies the outer electrode. The disk may be provided with a lip of hardened alloy material which extends in the direction of the outer electrode. The lip can have a rectangular cross-section or a triangular cross-section, and the gap between the inner and outer electrodes can be adjusted, either at the time of assembly or later.

    • A spark plug for igniting fuel/air mixtures in internal combustion engines, in particular in internal combustion engines of motor vehicles. On its insulating-body foot, the spark plug has a coating which is intended to protect against misfirings and cold-starting difficulties as a consequence of electrically conductive deposits, in particular in the case of installation of spark plugs in new motor vehicles. The coating includes solvent-free silicone rubber or silicone resin. The silicone rubber may contain filler and is provided with silicone oil for the purpose of good processability. Expediently, the inner side of the metal housing which is exposed to the combustion chamber is also covered with the coating. The coating is physiologically safe, environmentally acceptable and resistant to handling, and does not require expensive extraction systems if it is sprayed onto the appropriate region of the spark plug by means of nozzles.
