    • The claimed invention relates to a submersible direct-current electric motor to be used, in particular, for driving a submersible pump in downhole oil production. The claimed motor includes a fixed armature winding; a housing which encloses the armature winding and rotates around it; magnetic field generation means which are fixed in the housing and interact with the armature winding to generate electromagnetic torque; a fixed collector which is electrically connected to the armature winding; brushes which rotate around the fixed collector and are connected to the external electric circuit. The fixed collector and the brushes rotating around it are enclosed in an insulating chamber. The technical result consists in the elimination of the risk of a short circuit between the brushes and the collector of the direct-current motor when it is used as a submersible motor.

    • A commutation apparatus drives a brushless motor having a stator equipped with a plurality of coils and a rotor. The commutation apparatus comprises a rotatable commutator shaft, two or more conducting rings carried discretely about the shaft, and two or more conducting segments carried discretely about the shaft at staggered positions along or near a plane perpendicularly intersecting the shaft. Each conducting segment is electrically connected to one of the conducting rings. Two or more electrical source contacts are provided for rotatably connecting a power supply across pairs of the conducting rings. A plurality of electrical load contacts is further provided for sequentially, rotatably connecting the conducting segments to discrete coils of the brushless motor. In particular embodiments of the commutation apparatus, a magnetic coupling is employed for rotatably coupling the commutator shaft to the rotor of the brushless motor, and a pressure-bearing container is provided for rotatably supporting the commutator shaft and the coupling therein.

    • The Stationary Armature Machine (SAM) comprised of a stationary armature, a stationary commutator affixed to the frame or housing and a rotating field and brushes affixed to a common shaft as a means for mechanical commutation of electrical currents based on Lorentz' force law. SAM's unique stationary armature increases current carrying capacity and heat abatement at low voltages and high rotating speeds without increasing overall physical size relative to BLDC motors. SAM's armature and field structure are arranged in reverse having the armature in a stationary position with a commutation assembly affixed to the machine's housing while said field structure (and brush assembly) rotate at the center of the machine. By making the armature and commutator assembly stationary, the current carrying conductors can be made much larger without being subjected to extreme centrifugal forces at high rotating velocities. SAM is ideally suited for applications that require high torque and power at high rotational speeds in a small inexpensive package.

    • The subject dynamoelectric machine comprises an armature between two field assemblies. The armature may rotate between the field assemblies or vice versa. The armature has three two-coil windings with the coils of each winding located diametrically opposite each other on the armature and wound in opposite directions. Each field assembly comprises a field ring, winding cores (or permanent magnets) and pole faces which span essentially 180.degree., there being a north face and a south face for each field assembly. The field assemblies are positioned with like faces facing each other. The commutation apparatus energizes each armature winding just as it is positioned completely between the field pole faces and de-energizes it just before it starts to move out from between the faces because of the relative motion between the armature and field assemblies. The machine concept is adaptable to pancake and cylindrical configuration. The opposite direction winding of the armature coils virtually eliminates armature inductance and reaction effects. The machine also adapts to brushless commutation techniques.

    • A tape drive system for a cartridge tape player having a small thickness includes a DC motor which has a stator with a plurality of field windings, and a rotor with a permanently magnetized ring magnet coaxially surrounding the stator. Brushes on the rotor engage contacts on the stator to energize the field windings in sequence. A drive wheel connected to the rotor is coupled by a drive belt to a capstan pulley, which is larger than the drive wheel, to drive the capstan of the tape drive system, with the faster rotating rotor providing a flywheel effect to stabilize the drive. A tachometer generator includes a ring gear which is connected to the rotor and has a large number of teeth around its periphery cooperating with segments of a coaxial ring magnet. A pickup coil adjacent the ring magnet is connected to a control circuit which is coupled to the motor field windings to energize the same, with the control circuit changing the drive current to compensate for incremental changes in motor speed.
