    • Restoration of a link in fixed wireless transmission network, in the case of failure, is achieved by redirecting a directional antenna of a first network element from a second failed network element to a third network element, whereby a new microwave link in the network is established. A network element suited to allow fast and effective restoration in a fixed wireless transmission network has a directional antenna and corresponding control circuitry which are controlled by a control device to redirect transmission direction in the case of a failure. Preferably, the directional antenna is a phased array antenna. The control device can either be a central network management system or a local control system of the network node.

    • Systems and methods are described for subscriber loop repeater loopback for fault isolation. A method includes obtaining a sample of a downstream signal conveyed along a signal path; performing an analysis of the sample; determining a presence or an absence of a fault in the signal path based on the analysis of the sample; indicating a presence or an absence of a fault in the signal path by transmitting a diagnostic signal to an upstream node; and isolating a location of the fault as a function of the diagnostic signal. An apparatus includes a band pass filter; a detection unit coupled to the first band pass filter; a data processor coupled to the detection unit; a health checking unit coupled to the microcontroller; a digital to analog converter coupled to the microcontroller; a low pass filter coupled to the digital to analog converter; and a summer coupled to the low pass filter.

    • A communications method and a network for carrying out the method are provided. The network includes a loopback command system and a first link station connected to a communications link. The link traverses several loopback-capable devices as it extends from the first link station to a second link station remote from the first link station. The loopback command system controls the loopback-capable devices to cause them to loopback. In order to command a loopback of a particular loopback-capable device, the first link station generates an initial loopback value and forwards the same over the link to a downstream loopback-capable device located along the link. Each loopback-capable device receives a loopback value from an upstream device, and compares if the received value is equal to a predetermined value. If the loopback value is equal to the predetermined value, the device is placed into a loopback state. Otherwise, the loopback value is modified by the device, and the modified loopback value is forwarded to the next downstream device located along the link. The loopback value may be represented by a digital bit word, or by the position of a particular bit within a bit stream of the link.

    • Method and apparatus is disclosed for identifying faults in a subscriber carrier telephone system utilizing out-of-band pilot signals and comprising pluralities of cables and repeaters that are alternately connected in series between carrier equipment at a central office location and a subscriber station. Equipment at the office location transmits selected numbers of test pulses, having a test frequency that is between the transmitted and received channel and pilot frequencies, to the first cable. The pulses are detected at the first repeater and counted. A microprocessor is responsive to the test pulse count in the repeater for initiating associated tests on the cable and/or repeater, or for retransmitting test pulses onto the next cable to the next repeater for causing it to perform designated tests. The results of the tests are sent to the office equipment in the form of reply pulses having a frequency that is below the lowest channel frequency.
