    • A scanning device comprises a visible light source, an infrared light source, a visible light sensor and an infrared light sensor. The visible light source provides visible light to a scan section of an original. The original reflects the visible light to generate reflected light. The infrared light source provides infrared light to the scan section. The infrared light penetrates through the original to generate penetrating light. The visible light sensor receives the reflected light at a first scan position and generates a visible light image signal representative of a visible light image of the scan section. The infrared light sensor receives the penetrating light at a second scan position and generates an infrared light image signal representative of an infrared light image of the scan section. A relative positional relationship between the first and second scan positions is fixed. A scanning method for the scanning device is also provided.

    • An image forming apparatus includes a detection unit that emits light on a recording medium or a platen and detects reflected light while the detection unit moves in a direction perpendicular to a transportation direction of the recording medium; a width calculation unit that compares a value indicative of light intensity responsive to the reflected light with a threshold, and calculates a width of the recording medium measured from a position of the detection unit where the value indicative of light intensity responsive to the reflected light becomes greater than or equal to the threshold; an image formation unit that performs an operation of forming an image based on the calculated width of the recording medium; and an image formation control unit that halts the operation of forming the image upon detecting that the calculated width is less than or equal to a predefined value.

    • An image reading device includes a platen glass, a document feeder, a light source, a light receiving section, a first opening/closing detection sensor, a second opening/closing detection sensor, and a document size determination section. The document size determination section determines a size of an original document on the basis of a measurement result from the light receiving section. Where the first opening/closing detection sensor indicates the open state, while the second opening/closing detection sensor indicates no open state when the original document is placed on the platen glass, the document size determination section determines a size of the original document in a main scanning direction on the basis of full lighting-up determination data obtained with all of plural light emitting elements lighted up and partial lighting-up determination data obtained with some of the plural light emitting elements lighted up.
