摘要： During this information-extraction technique, a user of the electronic device may be instructed by an application executed by the electronic device (such as a software application) to point an imaging sensor, which is integrated into the electronic device, at a location on a document. For example, the user may be instructed to point a cellular-telephone camera at a field on an invoice. After providing the instruction and before the user activates an image-activation mechanism associated with the imaging device, the electronic device captures multiple images of the document by communicating a signal to the imaging device to acquire the images. Then, the electronic device stores the images with associated timestamps and spatial-position information, which is provided by a sensor which is integrated into the electronic device. After the user activates the image-activation mechanism, the electronic device analyzes the images to extract the information proximate to the location on the document.

Patterns on the scanner cover or lid facilitate not only edge determination, but orientation of text and other objects, and straightening of images in preparation for OCR and related functions. Electronic images and files derived from paper documents may be automatically cropped, deskewed, subjected to OCR, and named consistent with content or other information derived from them.

摘要： According to an embodiment of this invention, opening/closing of an ADF unit is correctly detected even under the influence of outside light. More specifically, a light source provided in a reading unit is turned on to irradiate a white board, and first data based on reflected light from the white board is obtained. Next, the light source provided in the reading unit is turned off, and second data based on reflected light from the white board is obtained. The difference between the first data and second data is compared with a predetermined threshold. It is determined based on the comparison whether the ADF unit is in an opened or closed state.

摘要： An image reading apparatus of the present invention includes a document placing unit on which a document is placed, a light source unit in which light sources are arrayed in a depth direction, a light source drive unit that drives the light sources, and a light source control unit that controls so that the light sources are divided into a plurality of groups to be driven. An image sensor is provided at a position capable of receiving light emitted from the light sources and reflected by the document on the document placing unit. Further, the document size is detected through detection of a position of an edge of the document from an output signal from the image sensor. Then, the light source drive unit is controlled so that, when the image is to be read, the light sources are activated to illuminate the document.
