    • Apparatus for measuring skew in a clock signal for processing a video signal includes a cascade connection of a plurality of analog delay elements to which the clock signal is applied. The output connections of each analog delay element is coupled to a data input terminal of a respective storage element. A signal representative of the horizontal synchronizing signal is applied to the storage elements to simultaneously latch signal into the respective storage elements, thereby capturing a representative cycle of the sampling clock signal in the storage elements. Decoding circuitry is coupled to the storage elements for detecting the relative position of the e.g., leading transition of the sampling clock pulse immediately preceding the trailing transition of the horizontal pulse A ratio is calculated indicative of the skew error, which ratio corresponds to the position of the first transition, in units of delay, divided by the duration of the sampling clock period, in units of delay. In one embodiment presented, the ratio is a measure, as a fraction of a clock period, of the time interval between a predetermined transition of the horizontal synchronizing signal and the leading transition of the first sampling clock pulse following such predetermined transition.

    • An information signal recording and reproducing system for recording and reproducing an information signal on and from a recording medium comprises a modulation circuit for modulating the information signal to form a modulated signal involving a number of pulses, a first frequency divider triggered responsive to a leading edge of the pulses in the modulated signal to produce a first frequency-divided signal having a frequency substantially lower than that of the modulated signal, a second frequency divider triggered responsive to a trailing edge of the pulses in the modulated signal to produce a second frequency-divided signal having a frequency substantially lower than that of the modulated signal, a recording device for recording the first and second frequency-divided signals on the recording medium, a reproducing device for detecting the first and second frequency-divided signals recorded on the recording medium to produce a first reproduced frequency-divided signal and a second reproduced frequency-divided signal, a synthesizing circuit supplied with the first and second reproduced frequency-divided signals to produce a synthetic modulated signal corresponding to the modulated signal by performing an exclusive-or operation of the first and second frequency-divided signals, and a demodulating circuit supplied with the synthetic modulated signal to produce a reproduced information signal.

    • Apparatus for recording and reproducing an information signal comprised of a video signal and an audio signal in a plurality of successive tracks on a magnetic tape, includes a recording section comprised of a PCM processor which converts the audio signal to a PCM audio signal and compresses the same, a dummy signal generator for compensating for tape jitter by generating a dummy signal and supplying the same to the PCM processor where the dummy signal is added both before and after each portion of the compressed PCM audio signal to be recorded in an overscan section of each track, and a magnetic head assembly which records the video signal in a main section of each track and each portion of the compressed PCM audio signal and dummy signal added thereto in the overscan section of each track; and a reproducing section comprised of a magnetic head assembly which scans the tracks to reproduce the information signal recorded therein, a switch assembly which separates the video signal reproduced from the main section of each track and the PCM audio signal reproduced from the overscan section of each track; a PCM processor which converts the PCM audio signal to the original analog audio signal and a timing signal generator for compensating for tape jitter by enabling the PCM processor only during a period slightly greater than the period of the PCM audio signal recorded in the overscan section of each track.
