    • In a continuous casting and rod rolling system, the production rate is generally limited by the capacity of the slowest element. The present invention is directed to changes in the rod coiling station portion of the system, and particularly to modifications to the flyer tube and loop forming portions which enable higher production capacity. According to these changes, the prior art flyer tube is shortened to eliminate the constant radius end portion thereof, and the circle forming function is performed by adding an annular cylinder coaxial with the flyer tube axis to shape the rod into a nearly perfect circle. The flyer tube according to the invention has a continuously changing angular relationship from its axis; the curved longitudinal path of the tube redirects rod from its vertical path to discharge the rod from the flyer tube in a generally horizontally direction. The circular loop forming cylinder forms the rod into circular loops which fall freely from the cylinder onto a turntable surface.

    • A high capacity single coil strip accumulator for transient storage of longitudinally advancing metallic or other strip material usually supplied in coils which must be welded end-to-end to form a continuous web which is to be fed at uninterrupted speed to downstream processing equipment, e.g., annealing.The single revolving accumulator coil is characterized by a variable number of convolutions and variable inner and outer diameters, with provision for continuously paying out of strip from its outer convolution, while intermittently adding new strip to its inner convolution. An independently rotatable cage with an axially locatable uncoiler for paying-off strip from a supply coil to said inner convolution has affixed thereto a joining device such as a butt welder, in the path of the strip from the uncoiler to the inner convolution. Upon the exhaustion of the strip from the supply coil, the tail end thereof is automatically gripped in the exit vise of the welder, and the latter with the cage rotate together with the accumulator coil until welding the leading end of a next supply coil to said tail end of said strip is completed. This causes partial depletion of the accumulator coil which is subsequently replenished by feeding strip from the newly joined supply coil at a higher speed than the payout speed. The invention is adaptable to an accumulator coil rotating on either a horizontal or vertical axis.

    • A feed-in mechanism for feeding strip material in helical fashion into an accumulator while preventing any bending or bowing of the incoming strip material by maintaining the strip material in the helix under tension. The feed-in mechanism includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced, helically arranged strip guides which define a helical path for the incoming strip, and a traction feed and tensioning device respectively located at the entry and exit ends of the helical path. The traction feed pushes the strip material along the helical path while the tensioning device exerts a pulling force on the strip material to maintain the strip material in the helix under tension. The traction feed includes a stationary idler roller and a powered traction roller journaled in a pivoting frame. The pivoting frame is urged towards and away from the stationary idler roller under controlled squeeze pressure to obtain positive traction between the strip material and traction roller, while the overspeed or overdrive of the traction roller is controlled so as not to overtension and consequently permanently deform the strip material being pulled thereby.
