    • A printer having a bank of electromagnetically operated print hammer mechanisms which are sequentially energized by only two driving circuits. Those hammer mechanisms which print in the even columns of the line being printed are energized by one of the driving circuits while those which print in the odd columns are energized by the other driving circuit. The two driving circuits are alternately energized so that characters are alternately printed in the odd and even columns. Each driving circuit is connected to the hammer mechanisms which it energizes via a network formed by two sets of leads arranged as a matrix. A first group of relays is provided to selectively connect the leads in one set with the driving circuit while another group of relays is provided to selectively connect the leads in the other set with a reference potential. Each hammer mechanism has its coil connected between a different pair of leads, each lead of the pair being in different sets. When one relay in each group is closed, a conductive path is provided from a driving circuit, to a hammer mechanism, to the reference potential. Decoding means are provided to simultaneously operate a pair of relays, one in each group, in response to outputs from a binary counter. Advancement of the counter sequentially operates the decoding means to close one pair of relays at a time and cause the hammer mechanisms to be sequentially electrically connected between the driving circuit and the reference potential. In this manner, one driving circuit sequentially energizes those hammer mechanisms which print in either the odd or even columns.

    • A printer has a carriage being movable between a first end and a second end of a reciprocating path; and a driving force transmitting path selecting mechanism provided at the second end of the reciprocating path. The selecting mechanism has: a common driving force outputting member; a plurality of force receiving members; a selecting member; and a position retainer for keeping the position of the selecting member. The selecting member connects the force outputting member to one of the plurality of force receiving members, and moves in association with the carriage when the carriage moves in a vicinity of the second end in a first direction extending from the first end to the second end. The position retainer keeps the position of the selecting member when the carriage moves in a second direction extending from the second end to the first end. The force receiving member connected to the force outputting member via the selecting member is selected in accordance with a movement of the carriage along the reciprocating path.

    • A printing device comprises a rotary type wheel provided on its outer surface with a plurality of types disposed at equal angular intervals and in at least one column, a printing hammer head disposed confronting said type wheel and undergoing displacement, in printing operation, to strike a desired type selectively onto a sheet of paper thereby to carry out printing, means for urging the hammer head to move in the direction of carrying out printing action, a mechanism for locking the hammer head in a non-printing position, and a mechanism for releasing the hammer head from its locked state by means of the locking mechanism. The locking mechanism comprises a locking member for locking the hammer head and a first spring for urging the locking member so as to make locking operation. The releasing mechanism comprises a single electromagnet, a second spring facing the electromagnet in spaced-apart relation which is caused to displace when the electromagnet is operated, a locking member displacing together with the second spring, an unlocking cam rotating correspondingly with the rotation of the type wheel and engaging the engaging catch displaced to further move the engaging catch thereby to release the locked state of the hammer head locked by the locking member.
