    • In a printer, a printing clutch and a hammer impact changeover mechanism are controlled through a control member by one electromagnet, in such a manner that in response to a printing signal the clutch is engaged through the control member by the electromagnet to start one printing cycle and, in the second half of the printing cycle, the electromagnet is operated to enable a hammer impact change-over mechanism with the aid of the control member. The energizing forces of two weak spring members are applied to a cam follower member operatively coupled to the printing hammer so that when a printing type element having a large printing surface is selected, the energizing forces of the two spring members are utilized to allow the printing hammer to strike the type element strongly, and when a type element having a small printing surface is selected, the energizing force of only one of the two spring member is utilized to allow the printing hammer to strike the type element less strongly.

    • An impact printing mechanism is disclosed having an electrostatic clutch assembly, including a rotatively mounted semiconductive coated drum and a conductive band wrapped around the circumference thereof. The printing mechanism includes a printing hammer and a print spring for actuating the printing hammer. When a print command is issued, a voltage is applied to the band to create a field between the band and the drum coating. An electrostatic force is therefore generated when the drum is rotating slowly or synchronous with the drum step motion. That motion will pull the band and compress the print spring. The potential energy stored in the spring is then ready to fire the hammer. A hammer firing command turns off the voltage pulse and discharges the field, releasing the electrostatic holding force instantaneously and firing the hammer by the compressed spring.

    • An intermittent drive for a single-element printing typewriter, calculator or similar machine. The drive comprises a drive shaft couplable via a cycle clutch to a driven shaft and a governor disposed on the driven shaft to couple it with and maintain it at the same speed as the drive shaft during the clutch cycle. The governor comprises a friction wheel having a generally circular cross-section provided with flattened portions. During the clutch cycle, when the clutch engages the driven shaft, the friction wheel contacts a roll fixed to the drive shaft preventing the driven shaft from leading the drive shaft in response to reflected forces. At the end of the clutch cycle, when the clutch is disengaged, the friction wheel has rotated so that a flattened portion of the friction wheel faces the roll, and driven shaft is free from the rotation of the drive shaft.

    • In a printing control device provided with a printing element having a plurality of characters thereon and operable to selectively present any desired character to a printing position, two-position control elements are connected to the printing element to control the amount of displacement required for one of the characters to be selected. Transmission elements are provided to cause the control elements to predetermine or prepare one of the two positions thereof, respectively. The control elements, caused to predetermine or prepare a particular position by the transmission elements, are driven toward the particular position by a drive means. At least one bias means is provided for biasing the transmission elements so as to predetermine or prepare a first position. The biasing force of the bias means is limited by a plurality of limit means to hold the transmission elements so as to predetermine or prepare a second position. The limit imparted to the bias means by the limit means is released selectively by electromagnetic solenoids to selectively bias the transmission elements so as to predetermine or prepare the first position. The transmission element so selectively biased is caused by at least one restore means to return to the position for predeterming or preparing the second position with the aid of the drive from the drive means and against the biasing force of the bias means.

The differential mechanism includes a first gear connected to the type element through a rotatably supported shaft. A sector gear meshes with the first gear to rotate the first gear in one direction in accordance with inputs to an arm on which the sector gear is mounted. The arm is pivotally connected by a pin to a link, which is pivotally mounted about the axis of the first gear, so that movements of the link change the position of the pin, which is the axis of rotation of the sector gear and is intermediate the sector gear and the input end of the arm, to rotate the first gear in the opposite direction. The inputs to the link and the arm are supplied through separate lever arrangements, which may be actuated by a single driving means or by separate pneumatically controlled means.
