    • A self-contained safety and security system and method that performs the multiple functions of theft deterrence, battery saving, battery analysis system, accident protection, and telemetry and control data communication for vehicles is disclosed. The electronically-based system for a vehicle having an existing power transmission circuit including a battery that can be readily installed and made operational by an individual having no special training using common household tools. The system requires the installation of no dedicated wiring in the vehicle. Furthermore, the system preferably installs without any cutting or splicing of the wiring in the vehicle's electrical system. The system preferably includes an electrical activity sensor sensing electrical activity on the power transmission circuit, a motion sensor sensing vibration associated with the vehicle, a battery-disconnect switch, and a controller to receive signals from the electrical activity and motion sensors and control the switch.

    • A method and apparatus for an automobile security system. A GPS Receiver is used to measure the location of an automobile, and after the user has left the car, to measure the location of the user. The location of the car when it is parked is recorded in the GPS Receiver System. When the user is more than a pre-determined distance from the car, as determined by a GPS location measurement that is compared with the stored GPS location, the security system is activated and the car is locked. Subsequently, when the user comes within a second pre-determined distance of the car, the security system is deactivated, and the car is unlocked. Advantageously, both the locking and unlocking is accomplished without forcing the user to perform any manual act. Advantageously, the user can get directions from the GPS Receiver to help locate the car.

    • An improved modular vehicle door lock and latch system is disclosed which includes a door latch mechanism, an inside door latch and door lock handle, and a unique outside door handle and door lock interface member, all of which are assembled into a pre-connected configuration together with all necessary control cables, thereby significantly reducing the labor required to assemble the lock and latch system into a door of a motor vehicle and correspondingly resulting in a significant cost reduction. A first module includes the inside door handle, the outside and inside locks, the door latch, and an outside door lock and door handle interface member, as well as linkages between these components. A second component is an outside door handle assembly which will be operatively connected to the outside door lock and door handle interface member. The outside door handle of the preferred embodiment has a lock plate which installs the outside door handle in position by merely placing it into position in an opening in the vehicle door and moving the handle from its non-actuated position to its actuated position.

    • An immobilizing device for a motor vehicle includes an immobilizer control unit on the vehicle, one or more authentication elements which can be carried by the user, and an actuation communication channel for immobilizer actuation communications which require authentication, between the authentication element and the immobilizer control unit. The immobilizer control unit allows driving operation and/or engine starting only if the driving authorization check is positive. According to the invention, an immobilizer operating element arranged on the vehicle can be operated without any manipulation of an authentication element, for user-requested initiation of the immobilizer actuation communication processes which require authentication. Alternatively or additionally, the brake pedal can be used as an operating element for activating engine starting, once it has been enabled by the immobilizer control unit.

    • A lock assembly includes an elongated shackle having an engagement portion. A lock housing has an open interior and at least one opening for receiving a portion of a lock.
