The image forming apparatus includes a first detecting part, a paper discharging part and a control part. The first detecting part detects the pass of an edge part of the document. The control part determines the length of a document along the direction of conveyance from the time required from the moment when the document reaches the first detecting part to the moment when it pass the first detecting part, determining the sorting destination.

摘要： An image reading apparatus comprises a vertical type paper feed unit which feed paper into a printing unit, and a discharge unit which contains the paper discharged from the printing unit. The paper feed unit and the discharged unit are arranged in a vertical direction to the printing unit, which will allow the floor surface projection area to be reduced. Further, the paper is conveyed into one of discharge trays in accordance with its paper size. Thereby, the larger size paper is discharged underside the smaller size paper, accordingly, it does not occur for the paper discharged to the upper discharge tray to shield the paper on the lower stage discharge tray from the visual angle. Also, the confirmation of paper discharge and taking out can be easily carried out irrespective of the paper size.

The sheet handing device has an intermediate tray which receives a copy sheet discharged through an outlet port of a transport guide member at a predetermined receiving position, and a hand unit which holds a portion of the sheet set on the intermediate tray to transfer the sheet set from the intermediate tray onto a sheet stacker. The intermediate tray carrying the sheet set thereon and the hand unit move toward a sheet releasing position in a state that the hand unit holds the portion of the sheet set to transfer the sheet set to the sheet releasing position. The hand unit pauses at the sheet releasing position while holding the portion of the sheet set. Meanwhile, the intermediate tray moves to a retract position away from the sheet stacker, and the hand unit releases the holding of the sheet set at the sheet releasing position. Thereby, the sheet set is transferred onto the sheet stacker from the intermediate tray.

The array of the sorting trays is positioned above the general-purpose tray. The sorting tray array and the general-purpose tray are normally held in a position where the sheet discharge port of the sheet transfer mechanism is positioned between the lowermost tray of the sorting tray array and the general-purpose tray as seen in a vertical direction.
