    • The present invention relates to the provision in solid form of the magnesium salt of certain aromatic, cycloaliphatic or conjugated aliphatic compounds containing a peroxycarboxylic acid group and a carboxylate group, and optionally also an alkyl, carboxylate, sulphonate, nitro, chloro or bromo group, which can be employed as bleaching agents. One especially referred example is magnesium monoperoxyphthalate having the formula: ##STR1## The invention also provides processes for the preparation of the salts, by reaction between a magnesium compound and the organic peroxyacid/carboxylate compound in a solvent from which the salt precipitates, the latter preferably being obtained by reaction between hydrogen peroxide and the corresponding anhydride under controlled reaction conditions of temperature and reagent ratios. The invention further provides desensitized compositions and washing compositions containing the bleaching agents and processes for washing or bleaching, employing them, preferably at from ambient to 60.degree. C.

    • P-Tolualdehyde freed from reaction-inhibiting substances is autooxidized by a gas containing molecular oxygen in an aliphatic ketone or fatty acid ester solvent under pressure in the absence of catalyst to produce per-p-toluic acid. The resulting per-p-toluic acid is brought into contact with a lower olefin in the absence of catalyst to produce p-toluic acid and an alkylene oxide at the same time, or said per-p-toluic acid is reacted with allyl alcohol to produce glycidol and p-toluic acid at the same time, and further the resulting glycidol is hydrolyzed to produce glycerin, or said per-p-toluic acid is reacted with methanol in the presence of an esterification catalyst to produce hydrogen peroxide and methyl p-toluate at the same time. The foregoing reactions can be carried out easily and safely in simple processes in high yields.

    • In the present invention, hydrated magnesium salts of the carboxylate group in certain aromatic or olefinically unsaturated peroxyacids such as monoperoxyphthalic acid or monoperoxymaleic acid are made by reacting the corresponding anhydride with aqueous hydrogen peroxide and a magnesium base, in the absence of a significant amount of free iron. By so doing, the process avoids the use of non-aqueous solvents such as ethyl acetate. Solid product can be obtained by using no more than enough hydrogen peroxide and water for solely a damp product to be obtained or by crystallization from an aqueous solution, preferably with recycle of the mother liquor. Preferably the reaction temperature is maintained at 5.degree. to 25.degree. C., employing 1.8 to 2.2 moles anhyhdride per mole of magnesium base, and 0.95 to 1.2 moles of hydrogen peroxide per mole of anhydride.The product can be used as a bleach and as a disinfectant.
