    • Compounds of the formula ##STR1## in which A-X- is the radical of a diazo component,X- is ortho to the azo group and is a metallizable substituent or a substituent convertible to a metallizable group,Y is --OH or --NH.sub.2,Z is methyl or carboxy,R is hydrogen, halo, methyl or sulfo, andB is the radical of a coupling component of the heterocyclic, non-cyclic active methylene or monocyclic benzene series, which coupling component of the monocyclic benzene series contains an amino and/or hydroxy group, which group(s) may be alkylated or acylated, and --N.dbd.N--B is bound to the 3- or 4-position of ring D, which comounds contain at least one water-solubilizing group, and metal complexes thereof, with the proviso that when the compounds are unmetallized, B is other than a monocyclic benzene coupling component radical. The metal complexes are useful as dyes for the dyeing and printing of anionic dyeable substrates such as natural and regenerated cellulose, natural and synthetic polyamides, polypropylene modified to contain basic groups, polyurethanes, anodized aluminum, sized paper and leather.

    • A new alkylated quinizarin, 2(2-ethylhexyl) quinizarin, useful for marking water immiscible organic liquids; marked water immiscible organic liquids; and a method of marking said liquids with an additive which may be subsequently extracted from said liquid and easily identified by visual inspection. The method comprises dissolving in the liquid to be marked an additive selected from the group consisting of an alkylated quinizarin, the reaction product of diazotized ortho tolidine and pnonylphenol and of diazotized xylidine and p-nonylphenol. The additive is detected by extraction from the marked liquid by means of a water soluble polar organic solvent containing a base and from 0 to about 75 percent by weight of water to yield a distinctively colored extract which is identified by visual inspection. The identification may be further corroborated by chromatographic separation of the additive or by spectrophotometric analysis.
