    • A brake lever for an S-cam brake has a worm wheel (3) engaging the S-cam shaft and a worm screw (4) meshing therewith. A clutch wheel (6) on the worm screw forms a clutch (8) therewith under the bias of a compression spring (9). A control movement is transmitted from an external reference point to the clutch wheel via a pinion (15), a carrier wheel (16) and a control screw (18), the common axis of these three parts being perpendicular to the worm screw, wherein the control screw meshes with the clutch wheel. The carrier wheel can be turned relative to the pinion an angular distance corresponding to the desired slack and is biassed to one end position by a torsion spring (17), which is also used to engage a one-way clutch (19) between the carrier wheel and the control screw.

    • An apparatus is furnished for the automatic adjustment of a brake in particular of a vehicle brake. The invention device provides generous assembly tolerances while employing relatively simple device components. The drive of the slack adjustment device (2, 4), formed from the gear rack drive (8, 9, 12), is surrounded in longitudinal direction of the gear rack by free spaces (30, 31), which furnish an appropriate clearance space to the gear rack (9). A pinion engages a second set of gear teeth of the gear rack. The pinion and a lost motion device drive the slack adjustment device. The drive device formed by the gear wheel, by the gear rack and by the pinion is disposed between the brake lever and a slack adjustment device. The device is suitable, in particular, to be employed in a brake lever with an automatic slack adjustment device.

    • An automatic slack adjuster for over-the-road vehicle brakes is adapted to be mounted between the brake chamber and brake operating shaft, for example an operating shaft known as an S cam shaft. The slack adjuster includes a body having a lever arm pivotally connected thereto, which lever arm is connected to the brake chamber through a brake operating rod. A drive member is fixed onto the brake operating shaft and is movably positioned within the body. There is an adjustable connection between the lever arm and the drive member for adjusting the relationship between the drive member and body in response to the body movement required for a brake application. The adjustable connection provides for incremental adjustment and is responsive, during brake application movement of the lever, for both sensing and taking up a limited amount of slack.

    • An assembly for attaching a brake cam shaft to a slack adjuster includes a cam shaft with cam elements at one end thereof and an attachment portion at its other end. The shaft has a spline adjacent the attachment portion. A securing member is locatable about the shaft or a shoulder on the shaft, the securing member or shoulder limiting the extent to which the splined end of the shaft may project into or through the splined aperture of the slack adjuster. A fastener is secured to the attachment portion such that when the shaft is securfed to the slack adjuster, the shaft is held fast relative thereto with the slack adjuster located between the shoulder or the securing member and the fastener.

    • Adjusting mechanism is provided for the brakes of a highway trailer. A brake lever is actuated by a pneumatic cylinder and carries a worm gear which is mounted for turning with the lever, and also independently of the lever. The worm gear is splined for non-rotatable reception of a brake shaft. A saddle pinned to the lever carries a tapered worm which meshes with the worm gear. The worm gear is axially split, and the two halves thereof are forced axially away from one another by the worm under load into engagement with surfaces fixed relative to the lever for frictionally fixing said gear relative to said lever. The tapered worm also wedges the periphery of the gear into frictional engagement with a surrounding part of the lever. The worm is turnable to adjust the rotational position of the gear and hence of the brake shaft when not under load, and the worm is lockable in adjusted position.

    • A slack adjuster for vehicle brakes is adapted to be mounted between the brake chamber and the brake operating shaft. The slack adjuster includes a body and a drive member movable relative to and positioned by the body on the brake operating shaft. A lever arm is pivoted to the body and there is an adjustable connection between the lever arm and drive member for the sensing and take up of slack during a brake application. The adjustable connection includes a clutch having facing and relatively rotatable clutch surfaces, each of which has opposing cooperating ratchet teeth. The teeth on one of said surfaces are separated into a plurality of radially spaced circumferential bands. The teeth in each band are positioned to independently engage the teeth on the opposing clutch face to provide increments of slack adjustment.

    • Automatic slack adjuster (10) for a vehicle braking system is provided with a bifurcated driving link (64) which drives an adjustment shaft (44) in a direction backing off the brake adjustment during the initial portion of the brake application stroke and effecting adjustment of the brake during the terminal portion of the brake application stroke. The mechanism connecting the link (64) to the shaft (44) includes an adjustment effecting lever (74) which is engaged with one arm (60) of link (64) through a lost motion connection. A back-off lever (80) is connected to the arm (62) of link (64) with little or no lost motion so that the back-off lever (80) is actuated during the initial portion of the brake actuating stroke before the lost motion between the adjustment effecting lever (74) and arm (60) is taken up. Levers (74,80) are connected to the adjustment shaft (44) by corresponding coiled clutch springs (86,92).
