    • A motor normally drives a gear-train which controls the hands when the motor is acted upon by pulses it receives from a driving circuit and which come from a divider and a quartz oscillator. In order to set an alarm to the desired time, a stem is moved by means of a crown to a setting position. The gear-train is then driven by a pinion and a wheel meshing with one another. The alarm time is recorded by a counter circuit owing to pulses supplied by a contact of a rotary detector. This time is stored in a memory when a push button is pressed. After the hands are returned to a position indicating the correct time of day, the counter circuit counts the elapsed time, and the alarm is set off when a coincidence circuit detects coincidence between the count of the counter and the data stored in the memory.

    • An apparatus for presenting astrological data which includes an arrangement for storing astrological data is described. A timer provides repetitively an enabling control signal upon expiration of successive time intervals of given duration, preferably of 24 hour duration, and a disabling signal upon the expiration of a second time interval of the given duration, the disabling signal appearing subsequent to the enabling signal. The stored data is selectively retrieved from the arrangement for storing by a means responsive to the control signals. A data receiver is provided which makes the selectively retrieved data available to individuals. The arrangement for storing is a film strip and/or audio recording, the latter preferably being arranged in a cassette. The data receiver is an audio playback system associated with a sound reproducer and/or an image projector associated with a screen. The stored data may be carried on an opaque strip and the data receiver may be an arrangement which permits the direct viewing of a portion of the opaque strip through an aperture in the housing of the apparatus.

    • A sign includes a frame having an upwardly and outwardly extending lip. Laterally spaced digit-forming indicating assemblies each having a hook-shaped upper portion are engaged over the lip of the frame and anchored in place on the frame by screw means or the like at the bottom portions thereof. Each indicating assembly preferably includes a vertical panel made of a material of low magnetic reluctance and supporting on the front face thereof vertically spaced horizontal rows of electromagnets each including a single core leg projecting transversely from the front of the panel and horizontally extending vertically spaced pivot pins offset slightly upwardly from the center lines of the rows of core legs. A number of preferably annular permanent magnets are supported on each pivot pin opposite the core legs and spaced horizontally therealong. An indicating disc is secured to each permanent magnet, and stop members formed by spacer sleeves located between vertical pivot pin supporting strips stop each permanent magnet from being moved into a position where the magnetic axis thereof reaches a position aligned with the magnetic axis of the associated electromagnet core leg.

    • A digital clock or other counting device in which the output shaft on the drive motor of the device is resiliently connected to the gear train by means of a spiral spring. The drive motor is of the stepper motor type and applies energy to the spring in discrete increments. During the initial portion of each increment, the gear train remains stationary, and it then gradually accelerates and continues its movement after the motor shaft has come to rest. The arrangement is such that there is a very smooth and quiet transfer of energy from the shaft through the gear train to the individual counting elements. In some embodiments the counting elements comprise register drums in which motion is transferred between certain of the drums by a Geneva type transfer pinion assembly and between other drums by resiliently biased planetary gearing.

    • A measured quantity readout device for use with flowmeters and the like comprising means for producing electrical signals indicative of the measurement of a predetermined quantity of flow; a motor adapted to be actuated by the electrical signals and driving a digit wheel which is provided with coded elements on its periphery for indicating the quantity of flow; two sets of contacts mounted on respective support plates and urged toward each other by a spring such that each engages the digit wheel in diametrically opposed positions on its outer periphery to sense the presence or absence of the coded elements; output lines for reading out signals indicating whether either or both of the sets of contacts are closed by the sensing of a coded element; and means operated by the motor for urging the sets of contacts out of engagement with the digit wheel to render the wheel free to be driven by the motor during its actuation by the electrical signals. Alternate embodiments of the latter means are disclosed and the details of one form of signal-producing means.
