    • A lithotripter is provided with the usual open ended reflector covered by a diaphragm and filled with a conductive liquid such as salinated water. A spark gap is provided at the focus point of the reflector, and a spark generator is connected thereto for providing a succession of sparks across the spark gap, wherein the light guide has an entering end positioned within the reflector and adjacent the spark gap to convey a representation of the spark outside of said reflector. The light guide has an exit end to which a light sensitive device is connected for converting the light signal to an electric signal. The electric signal is connected to means for providing a visual display of the electric signal.

    • In an arrangement for the generation and focussing of shock waves for purposes of comminution of concrements, wherein the generation is provided by a pair of electrodes, and the focussing is provided by a rotational ellipsoid; the electrodes extend from a sleeve being inserted in the body of the ellipsoid such that the electrodes center on one of the two focal points of the rotational ellipsoid; a positioning device for the electrodes includes a position indicator on the electrode sleeve such as a metal or optical marking on a mechanical actuator having a highly accurately predetermined positional relation to the electrodes; a position sensor on the body of the rotational ellipsoid has a highly accurately determined position in relation to the first focal point; and a circuit is connected to the position sensor to provide a audible and/or visible representation if, and only if, the position indicator has an accurate position related to the sensor as an indication that the electrodes are centered on the first focal point.

    • A lithotripter is provided with an upwardly opening reflector filled with water. A valve is secured to the undersurface of the member providing the reflector. A bore extends axially through the valve body in alignment with a bore in the reflector member to accommodate an electrode assembly. A disc is mounted in the body and also has a bore aligned with the first two mentioned bores to accommodate the electrode assembly. The electrode assembly can be partially withdrawn to clear the bore in the reflector member and also the bore in the disc, but blocking the passage of water through the valve body bore. The disc is then rotated to move the valve disc out of alignment with the reflector member body to prevent further loss of water from the reflector.

    • Apparatus for generating shock waves for destruction of kidney stones comprises an upwardly opening ellipsoidal reflector. A resilient diaphragm closes the otherwise open end of the reflector, and the reflector is filled with water or other suitable liquid. A spark gap is provided in the reflector at the first focus point thereof, and the reflector is positioned relative to a human body such that the diaphragm presses against the body and the second focus point of the ellipsoid lies precisely on a kidney stone to be destroyed. Electronic apparatus is provided for causing a repeating spark across the gap to generate a series of shock waves which are focused by the ellipsoidal reflector to concentrate on a kidney stone. Gas is released by the sparks, and either a small tube surrounds the spark gap, or a diaphragm immediately overlies the spark gap to isolate water adjacent the spark gap from most of the water in the reflector. The isolated water is constantly recirculated to flush away gas.
