In this case the additional electrode (150) is arranged electrically insulated from the ground electrode (112) and the central electrode (128), on the spark plug (100), wherein the additional electrode end (154) projects into the axial region (170) of the gap (146) between the central electrode end (140) and the ground electrode end (142) or is arranged into a region (170) of the gap (146) which is radially adjacent to the axial region (170) of the gap (146), and as a result divides the gap (146) into two ignition spark end gaps (156, 166).

    • A spark plug according to the invention has a length and an outer side surface. The outer side surface includes a plurality of closed band-shaped regions arranged in the lengthwise direction of the spark plug, within each of which a plurality of identical marks, which represent the same piece of information concerning the spark plug, are formed at predetermined intervals in a circumferential direction of the spark plug. Further, the marks within each of the regions represent the piece of information different from that represented by the marks within any other one of the regions, and each of the marks within each of the regions is aligned in the lengthwise direction of the spark plug with one of the marks within any other one of the regions. With such formation of marks, the spark plug can be accurately identified without rotating it to a specific position during the identification process.

    • An improved ignition apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes at least an ignition coil and a first electrode assembly and a second electrode assembly, each thereof including an electrode, and each of the electrodes of the first and second electrode assemblies is electrically connected to one end of a secondary winding of an ignition coil. The electrodes are supported on a cylinder head of the engine being electrically insulated therefrom and they form a spark gap for producing spark discharge therebetween, and a high tension circuit connecting the electrodes to the secondary winding of the ignition coil is electrically insulated from the body of the engine. The ignition apparatus having the above-described construction has the functional effects of improving the ignition performance, simplifying the withstant voltage design of constituent components, improving the antifouling performance at a spark gap portion and increasing the radio frequency interference suppression performance.

    • An improved spark plug for use in internal combustion engines is effective to produce a plurality of sequential sparks. The spark plug has a metal shell with an insulator member in the metal shell and extending therefrom, as is conventional. The improvement comprises a first electrode which extends from one end of the insulator member and has a free end spaced from a first end of a second or carrier electrode end portion. A first set of a spark discharging surface and a spark landing surface is formed on the free end of the first electrode and on the first end of the carrier electrode end portion respectively. A third electrode extends from the metal shell and has a free end spaced from a second end of the second or carrier electrode end portion. A second set of a spark discharging surface and a spark landing surface is formed on the second end of the second or carrier electrode end portion and on the free end of the third electrode respectively.
