    • An adaptive signal weighting system is disclosed for use in transmitting an electrical information signal of a predetermined bandwidth along a signal path. The system can be used to encode or decode the signal. The system comprises filter means disposed in the signal path for varying the gain impressed on the portion of the information signal within a first select spectral region within the preselected bandwidth. The gain is varied in response to and as a function of a first control signal. Means are provided means for generating the first control signal in response to and in accordance with the signal energy of the information signal substantially within at least a part of the first select spectral region. The system also comprises gain control means disposed in the signal path and coupled to the filter means for varying the signal gain impressed on the information signal substantially throughout the predetermined bandwidth, the signal gain varying in response to and as a function of a second control signal; and means for generating the second control signal in response to and as a function of the signal energy of the information signal within at least one other select spectral region of the information signal.

    • In an FM receiver having cutoff circuits for cutting off higher frequency signal components of an audio signal, and for reducing stereo separation between channels, there is provided a multipath detector for detecting an amplitude modulated FM intermediate frequency signal and outputting a control signal depending on the magnitude of the amplitude modulated FM intermediate frequency signal into the cutoff circuit so that the high frequency noise due to multipath transmission can be eliminated. The invention is particularly suited to use with a stereo FM receiver mounted in an automotive vehicle, but may equally be applied to a mono receiver, or a receiver in any location.

    • A control device for an FM car radio in which low frequency characteristics of the audio output signal are switched so that stereophonic music programs can be reproduced with enough bass sound and monaural speech or news programs can be reproduced without much bass sound but with desirable articulation. One embodiment of the device comprises a capacitor-resistor filter connected in series between the amplifier and the speaker for attenuating low frequency characteristics of an audio output signal only when monaural broadcasting is being received, a transistor for shorting the filter to send bass sound directly to the speaker only when stereophonic broadcasting is being received, and a pilot signal discriminator which outputs pilot signals to turn on the transistor only when stereophonic broadcasting is being received.

    • In systems which process frequency modulated carrier waves, such as video disc systems, video tape recorder/playback systems and radio systems, there are occasions where the FM signal suddenly drops to a low level. In the case of FM audio signals, these sudden drops result in objectionable tics and pops in the demodulated audio output. The apparatus described herein reduces these objectionable noises by utilizing a variable impedance in connection with a deemphasis circuit in the main signal path. Upon the occurrence of a signal dropout, a defect indication signal is provided to the variable impedance device. The deemphasis circuit has an overall time constant which includes the variable impedance device and which varies in accordance with the detected signal dropouts so as to provide a substantially smooth demodulated output signal whereby tics and pops, in the output audio signal, are substantially removed.
