    • A disc cartridge stores a disc that has a first side with a first functional portion and a second side. The disc cartridge includes: a cartridge body including a disc storage portion, a chucking opening and a head opening, where the disc storage portion has a disc window and a bottom and stores the disc therein so that the first side thereof is exposed through the disc window; the chucking opening is provided on the bottom of the disc storage portion so as to get the disc chucked externally; and the head opening is also provided on the bottom of the disc storage portion so as to allow a head, which reads and/or writes data from/on the second side of the disc, to access the second side; a shutter, supported to, and movable with respect to, the cartridge body so as to expose or cover at least the head opening; and a second functional portion, which is provided for the cartridge body and which produces an audiovisual effect by cooperating with the first functional portion of the disc.

    • An object of the invention is to provide an extremely large capacity disc cartridge which can avoid a head crush and a disc crush and has a high reliability, and a recording and reproducing apparatus for the same. In the invention, there is employed a disc driving method of recording and reproducing a disc substrate (a flexible recording disc) having a low rigidity on the basis of a non-contact mode while rotating at a high speed, having a step of rotating a standstill disc, a step of moving sliders (rotation stabilizing plates) for inhibiting a surface vibration (a vertical vibration) close to both surfaces of the disc from both sides of the disc by using an air flow, at a time when a rotating speed is increased and the surface vibration of the disc is reduced, a step of controlling the rotating speed to a predetermined rotating speed for recording and reproducing after stabilizing the surface vibration so as to record and reproduce, a step of returning the rotating speed to the rotating speed at a time of moving the rotation stabilizing plates close to the disc after finishing the recording and reproducing, a step of moving the stabilizing plates from the disc surface, and a step of stopping the rotation.

    • A recording tape cartridge is provided with a substantially rectangular case, which includes an upper case and a lower case rotatably housing a single reel wound with a recording tape T, and a non-contact memory M, in which is stored various information such as recording capacity and which is disposed at a predetermined angle of inclination inside the case. A pair of screw bosses is formed near both corner portions at a rear side in a direction in which the case is loaded into a drive device, and screws for joining the upper case and the lower case are passed through the screw bosses. The memory M is disposed so that at least part of the memory M is positioned on a virtual straight line T joining the respective screw bosses when seen in plan view. Positional precision of the memory inside the case is improved.
