    • A printer (10) for identification cards has a supply of a plurality of individual intermediate transfer sheets (14) that have a separable layer (50) on which printing can take place. The sheets (14) are passed across a printhead (18) for printing images on a surface (22) of the layer (50), and then an identification card (32) from a suitable supply (34) is positioned to overlie the printed intermediate transfer sheet. The intermediate transfer sheet (14) and the identification card (32) are then passed through a laminator (41) where the layer (50) carrying the printing is laminated to a surface of the card (32). The card (32) and the laminated intermediate transfer sheet (14) are then passed through a separator that will peel away a backing film (56) for the layer (50) carrying the printing, and the printed image will remain in place on the card (32).

The digital image capture device is adapted to capture an image of the subject and transfer the image to the PDA for processing by the application. The application is stored in memory (20) of the PDA and is executable by a microprocessor (22). The application is adapted to compile the image and data to form an identification card print job. The printer is adapted to receive and process the identification card print job to form the identification card.

    • A card printing and encoder apparatus (13A) provides for printing information on a card (19) to provide identification of a person, and includes two encoding stations (66, 82), one (66) to encode a smart card chip embedded in the card (19), and the other station (82) to encode a magnetic strip on the card (19). Ink ribbons (66) used in printers are provided in a number of types, colors, and other identifiable characteristics that are important for insuring that the correct ribbon (66) is inserted in the printer (10) for the then current print job. In the present invention, the ribbon supply (54, 64) include ribbon supply rolls (54) which are provided with identifying indicia (72) on one end of the roll (51), and a sensor (42) to read the presence of indicia (72) when the printer (10) is operated. The positions of the indicia (72) relative to selected reference positions (73) indicates the ink ribbon type. Suitable circuitry (50) is used to disable the printer (10) if the print ribbon (66) is not properly correlated to the requirements of the printer (10). A Hall Effect Sensor (42) is used adjacent the ribbon roll (54), and the indicia on the ink ribbon roll (54) comprise pins (72) or similar members that will affect the Hall Effect Sensor (42) output when rotated past the sensor (42).
