摘要： An antimicrobial composition that contains an antimicrobial agent and a sugar alcohol is provided. The sugar alcohol is more generally more biocompatible and biodegradable than the antimicrobial agent. In addition, without intending to be limited by theory, it is believed that sugar alcohols increase the attraction of the antimicrobial agent to microorganisms (e.g., the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria). Because a greater percentage of the antimicrobial agent molecules are brought into contact with the microorganisms, the efficiency of growth inhibition is increased. Thus, the antimicrobial composition provides good efficacy without the need for high levels of an antimicrobial agent.

摘要： A face mask for reducing the amount of microbes to which a wearer is exposed is provided. The face mask includes a body portion that has an outer layer that has been treated with a germicidal agent in an effective amount. The layer may be a nonwoven fabric like a spunbond, meltblown or coform layer and may be a laminate of such layers. The face mask having such a germicidal treatment can result in a reduction in microbial activity as compared to another face mask, identical but for the germicidal agent.

摘要： The present invention provides nonwoven fabrics that include a first level and a second level wherein the first level includes first fibers that include a polyolefin and a first amount of an additive or a combination of additives to improve wettability and the second level includes second fibers that include a second amount of an additive or a combination of additives to improve wettability wherein the second amount of an additive or a combination of additives to improve wettability is essentially zero or is less than the first amount of an additive or a combination of additives to improve wettability. In one desirable embodiment, the wettability of the fabric is temperature dependent and may decrease as the temperature decreases. Such fabrics may be useful as components in absorbent products, for example liners and surge management layers, by providing components that are wettable during an initial insult and then decrease in wettabilty as the insult cools to discourage flow back of the insult.

摘要： The present invention relates to a combination for surface treatment of a substrate, e.g. a nonwoven web, used in personal care product applications. The surface treatment combination not only provides adequate fluid handling properties, but also provides a topical delivery system effective in depositing a thin, tenacious and substantially continuous coating of a botanical extract on skin by an aqueous emulsion mediated dissolution of the agent from a substrate with subsequent transfer and deposition onto the skin. Coatings of the botanical extract on the skin resist removal, thereby preventing damage to the natural skin barrier and providing a protective barrier against chemically- and biochemically-induced skin damage.

摘要： A method for modifying the surface of a material adapted for contact with tissue of a human or non-human animal to impart biofunctional, bioactive or biomimetic properties to the surface comprising: (a) exposing the surface to a solution comprising (1) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer or mixture thereof capable, via the ethylenic unsaturation, of gamma irradiation or electron beam induced polymerization, and (2) at least one biofunctional agent; and (b) irradiating the surface with gamma or electron beam irradiation in the presence of the solution to thereby form on the surface a graft polymerized coating, the coating having physically entrapped therein or chemically bonded thereto molecules of the at least one biofunctional agent which imparts biofunctional or biomimetic properties to the surface; wherein the gamma or electron beam irradiation induced polymerization is conducted under one of the following conditions: A. (i) monomer concentration in the solution in the range of from about 0.1% to about 50%, by weight; (ii) total gamma or electron beam dose in the range of from about 0.001 to less than about 0.50 Mrad; and (iii) gamma dose rate in the range of from about 10 to about 2,500 rads/min., or electron beam dose rate in the range of from about 10 to about 108 rads/min.; B. (i) hydrophilic monomer(s) graft under conditions which may include monomer pre-soak or plasma gamma surface modification (especially for metal or glass substrates in latter case); and (ii) graft polymerization of monomer(s) with bioactive/biofunctional molecules using (i) as substrate; C. (i) Hydrograft™ as in A or B above followed by dehydration and adsorption of bioactive/biofunctional molecules into the hydrophilic polymer graft; wherein the biological properties of the biofunctional agent are substantially maintained.
